Table of Contents

The Anatomy of a Flute

The flute is a woodwind instrument comprising three main sections: the head, body, and foot. The head joint is where you blow into the flute, and it contains a cork that can be adjusted to slightly change the length of the instrument.

The body joint connects the head and foot joints and is responsible for the majority of the size of the flute.

Lastly, the foot joint is where the player’s fingers control the pitch of the notes being played. Inside the flute, you’ll find two air chambers, one of which plays a crucial role in determining the pitch of the instrument. These intricate parts come together to create amazing sounds.

Who Should Use a Student Flute?

Student flutes are designed specifically for beginners just starting their musical journey. They are perfect for young and adult students still learning the basics of playing this instrument. One of the main features of a student flute is the straight head joint. This design makes it easier for beginners to produce a clear and consistent sound. Additionally, student flutes usually have closed hole keys, another feature that makes them easier to play. Plus, it’s an affordable flute that will allow you to start playing right away.

Beginner's Guide For Choosing A Student Flute

Choosing a student flute can be overwhelming for beginners. Below are some helpful tips and considerations to help you choose the ideal flute for your needs.

Materials

Beginner flutes are typically made of nickel, silver-plated nickel, or solid silver.

There are also plastic flutes found in the market but these are usually made for younger students. Nickel flutes are the most affordable option and a great choice for those just starting out. Silver-plated nickel flutes are a bit more expensive but offer a richer sound.  Solid silver flutes are the most expensive option but offer the highest quality sound.

Flute Types

Flute Keys

Beginner flutes typically have closed-hole keys, which are easier for beginners to play.

As you progress, you may want to consider an open-hole key flute, which allows for more advanced playing techniques.

However, it’s important to note that open-hole keys can be more difficult to play and may not be suitable for all beginners.

Accessories

When choosing beginner flutes, it’s important to consider the accessories that come with them.

Look for a flute that comes with a cleaning cloth and rod, a carrying case, and a beginner’s book or DVD. These accessories will help you keep your flute in good condition and learn how to play it properly. It’s also a good idea to consider purchasing a flute stand, which will help you keep your flute safe and secure when not in use.  Additionally, you may want to invest in a metronome, which will help you keep track of time while practicing. When choosing a flute, it’s important to consider your budget, playing level, and personal preferences.

Tips for Playing the Flute

Playing the flute can be a challenging but rewarding experience. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Tips for Playing the Flute
  • Tip #1: Proper posture. Sit up straight with your feet flat on the ground. Hold the flute parallel to the floor and keep your elbows relaxed. This will help you produce a clear, focused sound.
  • Tip #2: Correct hand position. Hold the flute with your left hand on top and your right hand on the bottom. Your fingers should be curved and resting lightly on the keys. Avoid pressing down too hard, as this can cause your sound to be muffled.
  • Tip #3: Breathing. Take deep breaths from your diaphragm to produce a full, resonant sound. Avoid shallow breathing, which can cause your tone to be weak and airy.
  • Tip #4: Practice regularly. Consistent practice is key to improving your flute playing. Set aside a regular time each day to practice and stick to it.

How to Care for Your Flute

Proper care and maintenance of your flute are crucial to ensure it stays in good condition and produces the best possible sound.

PROS
  • After playing, always wipe your flute down with a soft, dry cloth to remove any moisture or oils from your hands. Use a polishing cloth to gently wipe the length of the flute's body, taking care not to apply pressure to the keys.
  • Never use water to clean your flute, as it can damage the pads and mechanisms. You can use rubbing alcohol on a cloth to clean the pads and keys, but be careful not to get any alcohol on the flute's body.
  • Additionally, don't eat candy or chew gum before playing; it can leave residue on the pads and keys. And always make sure to keep your flute in its case when not in use to protect it from dust and other environmental factors.

When to Upgrade from a Student Flute?

It’s generally recommended to upgrade from a student model to intermediate and advanced flutes once you have developed the skills and outgrown the limitations of the student model.

This may be indicated by a desire for a more refined sound, more keys or features, or simply a desire to take playing to the next level.

Ultimately, deciding to upgrade from a student flute depends on your personal preference and individual circumstances.

Student Flute Demo

If you’re unsure, consulting with a music teacher or flute specialist who can offer guidance based on your specific needs may be helpful.

Best Flute For Students
Summary

Choosing the student flute can be daunting, but you can find the perfect one with the right information! It’s always important to consider your skill level, playing style, and the budget available.

Remember to consider the key features when choosing the best student flute. Look for a flute with a responsive head joint, comfortable key placement, and a reliable mechanism.

Choosing a flute that’s easy to play and produces a clear, beautiful sound is also important.

Once you find the perfect student flute, always keep in mind that playing this good instrument is a journey, not a destination.

Be patient with yourself and enjoy the process of learning and improving.

Happy playing! And take a look at our next article, Best Flute Brands.

FAQ's

What is the best flute for a student?

The ideal student flute is easy to play and produces a good sound. A beginner student should consider a closed-hole flute with a C foot joint. A Yamaha flute offers reliable and affordable options for student flutes.

Which flute is best for a child?

The best flute for a child is a student model with a curved head joint. This design allows for a more comfortable playing position and easier reach for smaller hands.

What is the difference between a flute and a student flute?

A flute is a musical instrument that produces sound when air is blown across the mouthpiece. A student flute is a type of flute designed for beginners or intermediate players. It’s often made of more affordable materials and has features that make it easier to play and learn.

Why start with the beginner flute?

Playing and learning on a beginner model is easier than more advanced flutes. Beginner flutes typically have closed-hole keys and a C foot joint, which make them more forgiving for new players. They’re also more affordable and easier to resell when upgrading to a more advanced flute.
