Violinist Playing An Electric Violin During Performance

You’ve come to the right place if you’re wondering which strings to use for your electric violin.

There are factors to consider when selecting the lines that’ll work best with your instrument, such as your style and preference for sound.

At the end of this article, you’ll know my personal choice of Electric Violin Strings (and I’ll give you a hint, they are very Arty…!) – and another eight options I highly recommend.

Table of Contents

Is It Okay to Use a Regular Violin String on an Electric Violin?

Electric And Acoustic Violin Together In One Case

Yes, as long as you use the correct type of string end (ball end vs. loop end), you can use any type of violin string on your electric violin.

But wait, there’s more!

It’s important to note that electric violins have a unique sound and feel compared to acoustic violins, so using regular strings may not produce the best sound quality or playability.

The Case of 5-String Electric Violins

It provides the range of a violin and a viola in one instrument, making selection a bit trickier. It may be worth considering a dedicated electric viola instead of a hybrid solution.

Research and select the right strings to ensure optimal performance and sound quality.

Combining Violin Strings from Different Brands

Using the different brands of violin strings achieves a perfect sound. Aurora and Bridge are top brands to consider for warm tones, while Yamaha, Fourness, MSI, and NS Design.

Research and test different combinations to achieve the perfect sound for your instrument.

Tips on What to Look for When Choosing an Electric Violin String

Top Tip
Sunlit Violinist Playing The Electric Violin
1. Consider your playing style

Think about what kind of music you want to play. Different string materials and gauges can affect the tone and playability of your instrument, depending on the genre.

2. Choose the right material

It comes in various materials such as steel, synthetic, and gut. Experiment with different materials to find the one that works best for you.

3. Check the string gauge

The strings’ thickness can greatly impact your instrument’s tone and playability. Make sure to choose a gauge that’s comfortable for your playing style while also delivering the desired tone.

4. Consider the tension

High-tension strings can produce a brighter sound, while low-tension strings offer a warmer sound. Choose the tension that best suits your style and comfort level.

5. Think about your budget

It ranges in price depending on the manufacturer, brand, material, and gauge. Set a budget and prioritize what factors are most important to you to find the best value for your money.

How to Change the Strings of an Electric Violin

1. Remove all the strings

Hold the instrument facing you and turn the corresponding peg towards you to loosen the string. Once it’s loose, carefully remove it from the peg and the tailpiece.

2. Clean the instrument

Clean the instrument and remove any dirt. This will ensure that your new strings produce sound at their best.

3. Prepare the new string

Prepare the new string and unwind it from the packaging. Gently straighten it out and insert the string’s ball end into the tailpiece.

4. Wind the string onto the peg

Wind the string onto the peg and make sure the string is running straight from the nut to the peg and that there are no twists.

5. Tune the string

Tune the string with an electronic tuner to wound it to the desired amount

6. Repeat this process

Repeat this process for all strings until you have a full set of dominant strings on your electric violin.

Difference Between an Electric Violin and an Acoustic Violin

Electric Vs. Acoustic Violin

Electric Violins

Acoustic Violins

It uses magnetic pickup to convert the strings’ vibrations into an amplified electrical signal.

It produces a unique sound, and it can be easier to get a good sound out of them.

It’s recommended for beginners.

They produce the full sound that’s difficult to replicate because they’re made from a hollow structure that amplifies the vibrations of the strings when the acoustic instrument is played.

But you knew that already!

FAQ's

What strings do professional violinists use?

Some use electric strings, and others prefer classic strings. In most cases, classical violin strings are also recommended for electric violins. A comprehensive buying guide is available online if you need help choosing the perfect strings. This guide covers all the necessary information about strings and their types, making it easier to decide which is best suited for your instrument and playing style.

Does an electric violin need rosin?

Yes, it needs the vibration of the rosin to produce sound. The rosin creates a grip on the strings, vibrating when the bow is moved across them, producing sound from the instrument.

Do professional violinists use gut strings?

Many professional violinists prefer gut strings because of their warm and rich sound quality. So, if you’re considering trying out gut strings, you’re in good hands.

Which string is the most used in violin?

Most pieces use electric instruments and violins with 4-7 strings equally. You have more freedom to design compared to acoustic violins. You should take the size and tuning consistency when choosing an electric instrument. It has the range of the violin and viola in one instrument, making it easier to play both instruments.

Can you put viola strings on an electric violin?

Yes, you can use viola strings. It’s important to note that placing viola strings may result in a lower pitch. Viola strings are meant for relatively longer instruments. If you want to add a lower range, you can use steel strings and MIDI electric violins.

They’re cool but don’t forget, getting the right amp and effects pedal is as crucial as the violin itself!

Right?! Electric violins have such a unique sound. Totally going to look into those D’Addario strings.

While the article presents a comprehensive overview of string choices, it’s imperative to consider that the mechanical properties of strings can deeply influence sound production, especially in electric violins. The impedance, tension, and material composition of the strings should be matched with the electric violin’s electronic picking mechanisms to ensure optimal sound quality. Not all strings are created equal in this regard. It would be beneficial for readers to understand the underlying physics to make the most informed choice.

Good list of strings! Been using D’Addario on my electric for ages, they hold up pretty good. Never thought of mixing brands though, might give that a whirl. Cheers for the tip.

Hi Anna, just read through your guide and I have to say, it’s super informative! I’ve been thinking about getting my daughter into violin classes, and the electric violin sounds like a cool option. Since she’s a beginner, I’m leaning towards buying a Thomastik Alphayue Violin Strings based on your recommendations. Do you think it’s suitable for absolute beginners? Any advice would be appreciated.
