The Comprehensive Review of the Classic Ibanez
TMB100 Bass

The Ibanez talman TMB100 is a classic bass that offers great value for money. Its solid build quality, comfortable offset body design, versatile pickups and intuitive control layout make it ideal for beginners, while its affordable price tag appeals to more experienced players searching for a reliable instrument. Below are the areas we looked at when assessing this bass:

Design and Build Quality

The Ibanez TMB100 Electric Bass guitar is a well-designed and well-constructed instrument that offers a classic and timeless look. Combining a poplar body and maple neck provides a balanced and resonant sound. The fretboard is made of jatoba wood, an excellent alternative to rosewood and ebony due to its durability and sustainability. The gloss finish is smooth and gives the bass a sleek and professional look.

The body of the TMB100 has a traditional style with smooth contours and a deep cutaway that provides easy access to the upper frets. The neck is slim and comfortable, allowing for fast and precise playing. The 20 frets are well-placed and well-finished, with no sharp edges or fret buzz.

Design And Build Quality 1

The hardware on the TMB100 is of good quality, with a standard bridge B10 that provides good stability and intonation. The fixed bridge system ensures that the strings are anchored securely, which reduces unwanted noise and improves sustain. The Ibanez TMB100 Scale length is 34 inches, offering comfortable playability and balanced string tension for bassists.

Overall, the design and build quality of the Ibanez TMB100 bass is impressive, and it is a well-constructed instrument built to last.

Sound and Tone

The Ibanez Tmb100 controls adjusting volume, tone, and pickup selection easily, providing versatile sound customization for players.

It has two Dynamix pickups known for their clarity and versatility. The pickups are well-placed, ensuring that each string is captured evenly, resulting in a well-balanced sound.

The Ibanez TMB-100 produces a warm and full sound, perfect for playing various music genres, from jazz to rock. The bass can produce deep, rich tones, ideal for creating a solid foundation for any band. The highs are clear and bright, making it easy for the bass to cut through the mix.

Playability and Comfort

Playability and comfort are essential for any instrument, and the Ibanez talman TMB100 bass guitar does not disappoint. The neck is slim and comfortable to play, with a smooth surface that allows for easy fingering across all 20 frets. The bass’s body also has an ergonomic shape that sits comfortably against your body while playing.

The Ibanez talman TMB 100 also features a low action that makes playing single notes and chords easy. This allows you to move quickly between different positions on the fretboard, allowing for complex rhythms and melodies. The strings are also well-balanced, with no excessive buzzing or dead spots.

The bass also has a high level of sustain, which helps to create a punchy tone. This can be especially useful when playing aggressive riffs in the upper frets. The sound is loud and clear, with plenty of deep low end that will cut through any mix, perfect for beginners.

Versatility and Performance

The versatility and performance of the TMB100 is what sets it apart from other basses in its price range. The combination of the Ibanez DXP neck pickup and DXJ bridge pickup provides a wide range of tonal options, from punchy rock tones to smooth jazz sounds.

The two-band EQ offers simple and intuitive control over your tone, allowing you to quickly dial in your desired sound without fuss.

Versatility And Performance 1

The TMB100 also excels in live settings, with its solid construction and quality hardware ensuring you can play confidently without any worries. The neck is smooth and fast, allowing you to easily play complex passages.

The active EQ is great for emphasizing treble and bass frequencies, allowing you to dial in the perfect sound. The blend knob allows you to mix the two pickups, creating even more tonal options. The lightweight body and smooth fretboard make it easy to play, even when playing complex passages.

Value for Money

The Ibanez TMB100 is an excellent choice in terms of value for money. You get a great-sounding instrument at an affordable price, meaning you won’t have to break the bank to get your hands on a quality bass.

All in all, it’s a great bass for any player looking to get into playing electric guitar without having to invest too much money.

Overall Verdict

This bass is an excellent choice for a budget-friendly option that still sounds great. It has a striking design and the feel of more expensive basses, like a Fender Jazz or P Bass. The only issue is that it may require a full setup for optimal performance, which some beginners might need to learn.

After the setup process however, this bass plays and feels like it could cost much more than it does. This is for anyone looking for a great-sounding and performing bass at an unbeatable price! Overall it’s an excellent choice for anyone wanting to play bass with awesome features.

FAQ's

Is the Ibanez TMB100 a short scale?

No, the Ibanez TMB100 has a 34″ scale length, which is considered to be full-scale. This scale length is typically more comfortable for taller players, giving you access to a wider range of notes. It also allows for greater accuracy when playing complex chords and solos.

Is Ibanez TMB100 active or passive?

The Ibanez TMB100 is a passive bass guitar. It does not have an onboard preamp like some active basses do. Instead, it is powered by two Ibanez DXP neck and DXJ bridge pickups, which allow you to dial in your tone with the 2-band EQ controls. Bass blows are also easily achievable with the TMB100’s powerful tone.

How much does the Ibanez TMB100 weigh?

The Ibanez TMB100 weighs 8.8 pounds. That’s light enough to bring on the go yet heavy enough to stay grounded while you play. It also has a comfortable shape and body that won’t tire out your arms as quickly as a heavier bass might. Electric guitarists transitioning to bass will appreciate the TMB100’s manageable weight.

What are some alternative bass guitars to the Ibanez TMB100?

Some alternatives to the Ibanez TMB100 include:

  • Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass

  • Yamaha TRBX174

  • Sterling by Music Man SUB Ray4

  • Epiphone Thunderbird Vintage Pro Bass

  • Fender Player Precision Bass

These alternative bass guitars are generally priced similarly to the Ibanez TMB100, with some models being slightly more expensive or less expensive depending on the specific features and construction.

I’ve got to say, after reading Lewis’s piece on the Ibanez TMB100, it brings back memories. I remember playing one of these when they first hit the markets. The design and build quality segment really hits home. Ibanez did indeed master the art of creating a bass that doesn’t just look good but feels sturdy in your hands. However, in my years, I’ve transitioned to more premium models for professional use. But for someone just starting out or looking for a reliable backup, the TMB100 is a treasure. Its affordability combined with the quality Ibanez is known for makes it a solid choice for players at any level.

Regarding the sound and tone section of
Lewis Turners review, while the TMB100 is praised for its versatility, how does it actually compare to more established models like the Fender Precision Bass or Jazz Bass? Considering its price point, are we sacrificing significant quality in sound for a better deal? Curious to know others’ thoughts on this.
