Bass straps and guitar straps are similar in design and function, but there are some key differences to consider.

Bass Guitar Strap

Bass Guitar Strap

Bass guitars are generally heavier and larger than regular guitars, so a wider and more durable strap is recommended to support the weight and size of the instrument.

Plus, bass straps may have extra padding to provide more comfort and support for the player.

Guitar Strap

Guitar Strap

Guitar straps can be narrower and lighter as the instrument is smaller and lighter. However, some guitar players may prefer longer or wider straps for added comfort or style.

Ultimately, the choice between a bass strap and a guitar strap depends on the player’s preference and the size and weight of the instrument.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Bass Strap

Strap Length

Strap Length

A strap that’s too short can cause the bass guitar to sit too high on the player’s body, making it uncomfortable to play.

On the other hand, a strap that’s too thick or long can cause the bass guitar to sit too low, affecting the player’s technique and causing strain on the shoulders and back.

Therefore, it’s important for bassists to choose an adjustable bass strap that can be tailored to the player’s body size and playing style.

Strap Width

A wider strap can distribute the weight of the bass guitar more evenly across the player’s shoulders, reducing strain and fatigue during long playing sessions.

A wider strap can provide more stability and control over the instrument, allowing for better technique and precision. However, choosing a comfortable width that does not restrict the player’s movement or range of motion is important.

Comfort

Comfort

A good strap should be comfortable to wear for extended periods. Look for straps with extra padding or cushioning to help distribute the weight of the bass evenly across your shoulder.

This can help prevent neck and shoulder strain.

Security

You want to ensure your bass is securely attached to the strap to prevent it from falling off or becoming damaged. Look for straps with secure strap locks or other features to ensure your bass stays in place while playing.

Durability

Durability is another important consideration when choosing a bass guitar strap. You want a strap that’s built to last and withstand regular use’s wear and tear.

Look for straps made from high-quality materials designed to withstand the rigours of touring and regular gigging.

STRAP MATERIAL

The material used greatly determines the price of the best guitar strap’s durability, comfort, and overall quality. Here are some of the most common materials used for bass guitar straps:

Leather

Nylon

Nylon bass guitar straps are lightweight and durable, making them a great choice for gigging musicians who need a wide bass guitar strap that can withstand frequent use.

Nylon straps come in a variety of colours and patterns, so you can find one that matches your style. They're also usually less expensive than leather straps.

Neoprene bass guitar straps are a newer option that is becoming increasingly popular. Neoprene is a synthetic rubber material that is soft, stretchy, and comfortable.

It's also durable and can withstand frequent use. Neoprene straps are a great choice for bass players who want a comfortable and durable strap.

Polyester best guitar straps really are a great choice for bass players who want a stylish, functional strap.

Canvas

Canvas bass guitar straps are a popular choice for musicians who want a durable and affordable strap. Canvas and most guitar straps are made from a heavy-duty fabric that can withstand frequent use.

They're also usually less expensive than leather straps and come in various colours and patterns.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene bass guitar straps are a newer option that is becoming increasingly popular. Polypropylene is a synthetic material that's lightweight, durable, and water-resistant. It's also usually less expensive than leather straps.

How To Attach a Bass Guitar Strap

To attach a bass guitar strap, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the strap buttons on your bass guitar. These are typically located on the upper and lower edges of the guitar’s body.

  2. Hold the strap with the leather or padded side facing up and the adjustable end in your right hand.

  3. Thread the adjustable end of the strap through the strap button on the lower edge of the guitar. Make sure the strap is securely attached to the button.

  4. Hold the bass guitar with your left hand and adjust the strap length to your desired height.

  5. Thread the adjustable end of the strap through the strap button on the upper edge of the guitar. Make sure the strap is securely attached to the button.

  6. Adjust the strap length as needed to ensure the bass guitar is comfortable and secure to play.

  7. Test the strap by gently pulling on the guitar to ensure it is securely attached to the strap buttons.

I’m not sure I agree with the emphasis on strap locks. My bass came with some, and they seem like overkill. Are they really necessary?

SallyStrings, they might seem like overkill until your strap fails during a gig. Trust me, it’s worth the peace of mind!

Who knew straps could be so high maintenance, lol. Next you’ll tell me they need their own gig bags.

hey, for anyone who’s tried both the Fender Poly Strap and the Ernie Ball Polypro, which one would you say is better for long gigs? i’m on the fence and i really value comfort over the long sets.

In my experience, the Fender strap felt better on my shoulder for those longer sets. Might come down to personal preference.

BassMaster2000, I’ve used both and prefer the Ernie Ball for its durability and comfort. Played a 3-hour gig with no issues.
