Having a hard time keeping your guitar steady while you play those awesome tunes? Knowing how to attach a guitar strap really helps make playing feel more comfy and safe.

In this blog post, I’ll show you the steps to quickly and securely attach a strap to your acoustic or electric guitar.

Knowing how to attach a strap is essential for improving your performance and comfort. I have everything you need, from ensuring it fits your style to holding up during intense solos.

Keep reading to discover how a simple guitar strap can change your playing style and boost your confidence!

Table of Contents

Choosing the Right Guitar Strap

Choosing the right guitar strap can greatly improve your playing experience. A comfortable, supportive strap allows you to play longer without fatigue, while a poorly designed one can cause discomfort or injury. Here are the key factors to consider when selecting a guitar strap:

Stagg Nylon Guitar Strap 2'' Black Review

Material & padding

The material and padding of a guitar strap are essential for comfort and durability. Common materials include leather, nylon, and polyester. Leather is durable and classic but can be pricier. Nylon and polyester are lightweight and affordable but may not last as long as leather.

Padding is crucial for comfort, especially during long playing sessions. Choose straps with thick padding to help distribute the guitar’s weight evenly.

Width

The width of your guitar strap can also impact comfort and support. A wider strap will distribute the weight of your guitar more evenly across your shoulder, reducing strain and fatigue. Generally, straps between 2-4 inches in width are recommended for most guitarists.

Aesthetic

When choosing a guitar strap, comfort and support should be your main priorities, but aesthetics can also play a role. Guitar straps come in various styles, colors, and patterns, so you can find one that matches your style and guitar.

Some guitarists prefer simple, understated straps that don’t distract from their playing, while others like bold, eye-catching designs that make a statement. Choose a strap that makes you feel comfortable and confident when playing.

How To Put A Strap On An Acoustic Guitar?

Acoustic guitars are popular instruments used by musicians all over the world. Attaching a strap to an acoustic guitar can be done in several ways, depending on your guitar type.

Perri'S Leathers Adjustable Guitar Strap Review 1

Putting a Strap On a Guitar with Two Pins

To put on a guitar strap with two pins:

  1. Attach the strap’s hook to the top pin.
  2. Hitch the other end under the strings onto the lower pin.
  3. Ensure both ends are securely fastened so your guitar doesn’t slip while playing.
  4. Adjust the strap until you feel comfortable playing.

For acoustic guitars with two pins, the strap should usually be comfortably around shoulder height when standing, but this may vary depending on body type and size.

Putting a Strap On a Guitar with One Pin

If your acoustic guitar has only one strap pin:

  1. Carefully slip one end of the strap beneath all the strings and over the pin.
  2. Using both hands, gently hold the strings apart to slip the other end of the strap into place.
  3. Double-check that both ends are securely attached to prevent slips or accidents while playing.

Acoustic Guitar Without Pins

If your acoustic guitar doesn’t have strap pins, or if you prefer not to use them, you can:

  1. Thread nylon ties through tiny holes on either side of the headstock, near where straps are usually attached.
  2. These ties create secure loops that serve as anchor points for adding loops or clips.
  3. You can attach a traditional guitar strap to these loops or clips.

Affordable kits with all the necessary components and instructions are available online.

How To Put A Strap On An Electric Guitar?

If you’ve ever wanted to know how to put a strap on an electric guitar, the process is surprisingly simple with just a few materials. You only need two strap pins, a leather guitar strap, and, optionally, a strap adapter or guitar strings.

  1. Most electric guitars have two strap buttons, one at the bottom of the guitar and one at the top of the guitar body.
  2. Straps have a hole or loop at one end. Slide the hole or loop onto the bottom button to ensure it’s securely attached.
  3. Adjust the length.
  4. Once you’ve adjusted the length, slide the hole or loop on the other end of the strap onto the top button and make sure it’s securely attached.
  5. Double-check everything.

Our Recommended Electric Guitar Straps

Our top three picks for electric guitar straps are the Stagg Nylon Guitar Strap 2”, the Gibson 2″ Woven Strap and the D’Addario Woven Guitar Strap. These options have excellent quality and style, supporting your instrument without sacrificing comfort.

  • Next, run the strap behind the guitar’s waist and hook it to the bottom of the soundhole.

  • When playing with a strap, support the guitar with one hand. This will help keep it from tipping forward or falling out of the strap.

Our Recommended Classical Guitar Straps

Most classical guitar straps have a loop to fit around the neck and an extra length that wraps around the waist of the instrument. We suggest trying out these straps for your classical guitar:

The Importance of Strap Locks

What Is A Guitar Strap Lock

Strap locks are crucial for guitar maintenance. They keep your strap securely attached to the guitar body, preventing it from slipping off and causing you to drop the instrument.

Strap locks have two parts: a button that attaches to the strap and another piece that goes into one of the holes in the guitar’s body.

A strap pin, or guitar strap button, is the metal piece that attaches your strap to the guitar’s body. It usually has a cylindrical pin that screws into the guitar and a button-shaped top that clips into the strap.

Strap locks are essential for any guitar setup. They provide extra security, making it less likely for your strap to come unclipped and easier to switch between playing stances or moving around with the instrument when needed.

Tips on Adjusting the Strap

When adjusting the strap for a classical guitar:

  1. Ensure it is tight enough to hold the instrument securely but not too tight to interfere with its sound.
  2. Ensure that the strap is positioned in such a way that allows you to play comfortably without straining your neck or arms.
  3. Use additional padding or spring-loaded clips to ensure the strap fits comfortably.
  4. Finally, make sure there are no twists on the strap. This will ensure a comfortable playing position and prevent the guitar from sliding off or slipping away.

How To Put On A Guitar Straps
Summary

Now you know how to attach a guitar strap. With a bit of practice, you’ll be a strap-attaching pro. A good strap means you and your guitar can play together comfortably.

Checking the stability of your guitar strap ensures that your instrument hangs on safely while you’re lost in the music. Aligning the strap buttons and giving them a firm push ties the knot in this simple yet essential task.

Here’s a nifty breakdown of what we’ve covered:

  • Locate Strap Pins: These little guys are your best friends for stability.
  • Attach the Strap: Firmly connect it to the pins — no wobble allowed.
  • Adjust for Comfort: Make it fit snugly yet comfortably; we don’t want cramps.
  • Check the Fit: Give it a little jump and jive to ensure it’s right.

And hey, feel free to return to these steps whenever you need a reminder! Your guitar is ready to be your dance partner, so make sure you confidently take the lead.

Here’s to many excellent jam sessions filled with rhythm and joy!

FAQ's

How to attach a guitar strap?

Attaching a guitar strap to your instrument is easy! All you need to do is connect each end of the strap to the two strap buttons on the guitar’s body – one near the base and one near the neck. Some guitars may have only one strap button, in which case you simply attach one end of the strap to it and the other to a peg on the head of the guitar. After you’ve connected both ends, adjust the length of the strap so that it fits comfortably for playing.

Which end of guitar strap goes where?

The end of the guitar strap with the thicker material should go on the top knob of your guitar near the neck. The thinner end should be attached to the bottom knob near the base. With this arrangement, the guitar will be securely placed while you play.

Can you attach a strap to any guitar?

Yes, you can attach a strap to any guitar. Whether you’re playing a classical nylon-string guitar or an electric solid body, adding a strap will give you more freedom to move around and make it easier to play standing up.

Do guitar strap buckles go on front or back?

It’s totally up to you! Some guitarists prefer the strap buckle to be on their front, while others like it in the back. Experiment to find out what’s most comfortable for you!

How do you put a strap on a guitar without the top button?

If your guitar doesn’t have a top button to attach a strap, don’t fret! Run the guitar strap around your back and cross it over your dominant shoulder. Then, take the strap over the front of your guitar and loop it around the treble side’s upper bout. Now you’re ready to shred.

While I appreciate the thoroughness of the article, I believe that more emphasis should be placed on the traditional methods of attaching straps to classical guitars. Using a strap button can compromise the integrity of the instrument. Ideally, a method involving tying the strap around the headstock should be explored in greater detail. This respects the construction and traditional play style of classical guitars.

Solid advice on strap locks, Lewis. Lost a ’72 Telecaster to a cheap strap coming loose. It’s an investment in your gear’s longevity.
