Seeking a **fresh** ukulele? Don’t search further; a **concert ukulele’s** your best bet! (IMHO)

These bad boys are slightly bigger than your regular soprano ukulele, so they pump a bigger and fuller sound. And guess what? They’re super easy to play, too!

Plus, they’re like the chameleons of the music world, perfect for any genre you want to tackle.

Now, before you dive into the world of concert ukuleles, there are some things you have to know. But don’t worry, because I’ve done the hard work for you.

I’ve found the absolute best concert ukuleles on the market! It’s my job, and I love it!

I’ve considered how they sound, how they’re made, and how much they’ll cost you. Plus, after testing them all, I even purchased one I tested because I loved it so much.

But which one? Well, I’ll tell you straight away. It’s the Cordoba 20cm. It looks amazing, and sounds even better.

But that doesn’t mean it’s the right Uke for you. So let’s discover why…

Table of Contents

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Concert Ukulele

If you’re in the market for a concert ukulele, there are a few factors to consider before making your purchase. Here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Size and Comfort

Concert ukuleles are slightly larger than soprano ukuleles, which makes them a great choice for players who want a little more room to work with.

However, if you have smaller hands, consider a soprano ukulele instead.

Choosing a ukulele that feels comfortable in your hands and is easy to play is important.

2. Material and Construction

The material and construction of your ukulele can affect its sound quality, durability, and overall appearance.

Some of the most common materials used for concert ukuleles include mahogany, koa, and spruce. Solid wood ukuleles tend to produce a warmer, richer sound than laminate ukuleles.

Pay attention to the quality of the construction. Look for a ukulele with a solid top, as this can improve the sound quality and resonance.

3. Sound Quality

The sound quality of your ukulele is arguably the most important factor to consider. When choosing a concert ukulele, <b>listen for a clear, bright sound with good sustain.

You may also want to consider the type of strings used on the ukulele, as this can also affect the sound quality.

4. Price

Concert ukuleles can range in price from under $/£50 to over $/£1,000. While it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, remember you get what you pay for.

A higher-priced ukulele may offer better sound quality, construction, and durability. However, plenty of great concert ukuleles are available at a reasonable price point.

5. Aesthetics

Finally, consider the overall appearance of the ukulele. While this may not affect the sound quality, it’s important to choose a ukulele that you find visually appealing.

Look for a ukulele with a finish that you like, and consider any additional design elements, such as inlay or binding.

Understanding Concert Ukuleles

History of the Concert Ukulele

The history of the concert ukulele traces back to the late 19th century in Hawaii. The ukulele, originally brought to the islands by Portuguese immigrants, gained popularity among Hawaiians.

As its sound and versatility captured the hearts of musicians, the concert ukulele emerged as a slightly larger and fuller-sounding version of its smaller soprano sibling.

With a longer scale length and more frets, the concert ukulele became the preferred choice of professional musicians and solo performers.

Concert Ukulele

Today, it continues to be cherished for its warm and melodic tone, making it a beloved musical instrument for both seasoned players and beginners.

The Scale and Tone

The scale and tone of the concert ukulele contribute to its unique and captivating sound.

The concert ukulele strikes a perfect balance with a slightly larger size than the soprano ukulele and a shorter scale than the tenor ukulele.

This scale length enhances the playability, making it comfortable for beginners and experienced players.

The tone of the concert ukulele is warm, bright, and resonant, boasting a fuller sound produced than the soprano.

Luna High Tide Exotic Concert Ukulele Review

The combination of the scale and tone of the concert ukulele creates a melodic and harmonious experience for musicians, making it a popular choice among ukulele enthusiasts.

The concert uke is larger than the soprano ukulele, with a scale length of around 15 inches. This extra size gives it a deeper tone and more volume than the soprano, making it an excellent choice for musicians who want a fuller sound.

It’s also popular for those who want to play more complex chords and melodies, as the extra frets allow for a wider range of notes.

Mahogany Vs Other Woods

When it comes to choosing the right wood for your concert ukulele, Mahogany stands out as a top contender. Its warm and rich tone is highly sought after by ukulele players worldwide. Compared to other woods, Mahogany offers several distinct advantages.

Firstly, Mahogany is known for its excellent sustain. This means that the notes you play on a Mahogany ukulele will resonate for a longer period, creating a more desirable sound.

Top Tip

Balance Tone

Mahogany has balanced tonal response makes it suitable for various playing styles and genres.

Another advantage of Mahogany is its durability. This hardwood is less prone to warping or cracking, making it a reliable choice for musicians. Its stability also ensures that the ukulele retains its sound quality over time.

Aesthetics

In terms of aesthetics, Mahogany’s reddish-brown color with beautiful grain patterns adds an attractive touch to any concert ukulele. It often features a smooth finish that enhances its visual appeal.

While other woods, such as koa or spruce, offer unique characteristics, Mahogany remains popular due to its exceptional tonal qualities, durability, and aesthetic appeal.

Sound Quality and Projection

The concert ukulele produces a warm and rich tone that is delightful to the ears. Its slightly larger size compared to the soprano ukulele allows for a fuller and more resonant sound.

This makes it an excellent choice for both solo performances and group settings. The concert ukulele’s sound projection is impressive, allowing your melodies and chords to ring out with clarity and volume.

Whether you’re playing in an intimate setting or on a big stage, the concert ukulele’s sound quality and projection will surely captivate your audience.

Concert Ukulele VS Other Types

Here are some comparisons between concert ukuleles and other types of ukuleles:

Concert ukulele vs. soprano ukulele

Soprano ukuleles are the smallest and most traditional type, while concert ukuleles are slightly larger and have a fuller sound. Concert ukuleles also have a longer fretboard, making it easier for people with larger hands to play.

Concert ukulele vs. tenor ukulele

Tenor ukuleles are even larger than concert ukuleles and have an even deeper, richer sound. They're often favoured by professional musicians and those who want a more complex sound from their instruments.

Concert ukulele vs. baritone ukulele

Baritone ukuleles are the largest type of ukulele and have a sound similar to a small guitar. They're tuned differently than other ukuleles and are often used by musicians who want to play more complex chords and melodies.

Accessories and Extras

When you purchase a concert ukulele, you’ll want to consider investing in accessories to help you get the most out of your instrument. Here are some of the most essential accessories you should consider:

Gig Bag

A gig bag is an essential accessory for any ukulele player. It protects your instrument when you’re on the go, making it easier to transport your ukulele to gigs, rehearsals, or lessons. Look for a gig bag with a padded interior to provide extra protection for your instrument.

Maintenance and care of concert ukuleles

Keep it clean

Wipe down your concert ukulele after each use with a soft cloth to remove any dirt or oils that may have accumulated on it.

Store it properly

Keep your concert ukulele in a case or gig bag when you’re not playing it to protect it from dust, humidity, and other environmental factors.

Monitor humidity levels

Concert ukuleles are made of wood and can be affected by changes in humidity. Keep your ukulele in a room with consistent humidity levels, or use a humidifier or dehumidifier to maintain the ideal level.

Check tuning regularly

Make sure to tune your concert ukulele regularly to keep it sounding its best. Use a digital tuner or a tuning app to ensure accuracy.

Change strings as needed

Over time, the strings on your concert ukulele will wear out and lose their tone. Change them regularly to keep your ukulele sounding fresh and vibrant.

Avoid extreme temperatures

Don’t leave your concert ukulele in a car or other area with extreme temperatures, as this can cause damage to the instrument.

I appreciate the effort in compiling this list, but I must say, it seems slightly biased towards certain brands. While I understand that Kala and Cordoba are giants in the industry, there are also numerous smaller brands that produce equally stunning concert ukuleles. It would have been beneficial to see a more diverse range of suggestions, covering not just the mainstream but also the hidden gems of the ukulele world. This diversity would help readers make a more informed decision based on a broader perspective of what’s available.

Hey there, Lewis! I’m pretty new to the ukulele world and stumbled upon your article while looking for my first concert ukulele. I’m leaning towards the Kala KA-C because of its popularity among beginners, but I’m torn about the importance of wood quality. How much difference does it really make in the sound for a newbie? Would love your take on this, especially when considering the price point.
