Ernie Ball Prodigy, 6 Pack

The Ernie Ball Prodigy guitar pick stands out as a distinctive choice among guitarists thanks to its fine point. Despite its unconventional design, this pick has gained popularity and even won over some dedicated Jazz III users. The fine point enhances control and precision, especially for lead players who need to select specific strings quickly during high-speed performances. The pick’s bevelled edges offer a comfortable experience for both strumming and playing intricate lead lines.

While there are various shapes available, one option closely resembles the dimensions of a Jazz III, although the standard shape is highly preferred due to its familiar feel combined with a finer and more accurate point.

Factors to Consider
When Choosing an Acoustic Guitar Pick

1. Type

Guitar Pick Texture

Guitar picks are a widely used accessory among guitarists. Over time, they have become more complex and specialized. Generally, there are three types of picks: flat, thumb, and finger. Flat picks are the most recognizable type of pick, typically used to pluck or strum the guitar strings.

Thumb picks, on the other hand, are usually used for bass strings and may be worn on the thumb, while finger picks are often paired with a thumb pick to pluck or strum the guitar’s lower strings.

2. Material

Guitar Pick Materials

The material of your guitar pick tremendously impacts how your acoustic guitar sounds and feels. There’s a whole world of options, but let’s dive into the most popular ones: nylon, celluloid, acetal, acrylic/lexan, ultem, and carbon fiber.

Nylon

Nylon picks are like little sound sponges, soaking up the energy from your guitar strings and creating a warm, cosy tone that’s perfect for strumming those delightful chords.

Acrylic

If you’re feeling adventurous, acrylic/lexan might be your jam. It’s all about brightness and durability, but here’s the catch—it can be a bit slippery to hold onto.

So, if you’re up for a challenge and want that sparkling tone, give it a whirl.

Celluloid

Now, celluloid is a different beast. It’s stiffer than nylon, so it adds a touch of brightness to your sound.

But be warned; it’s not shy about letting you hear the strings as they vibrate, adding a bit of delicious string noise to your playing. The best part? It’s flexible enough to handle those lighter gauge picks with ease.

Acetal

Acetal, also known as Delrin. This stuff is like the superhero of picks. It’s tough, low-friction, and boasts a stylish matte finish that gives you an excellent grip.

When you strum those strings, acetal adds a dose of brightness and a fierce attack that will make your playing pop.

Ultem

Now, let’s talk about Ultem. This bad boy is a high-strength plastic that brings out the brilliance and clarity in your acoustic guitar.

It’s like a sonic spotlight, showcasing every intricate detail of your playing. When you strum with Ultem, your sound shines like a star.

Carbon Fiber

Last but not least, carbon fiber. Lightweight and textured, it’s a pick that craves dynamics.

Depending on your playing technique, it can add depth and dimension to your sound, giving you a truly versatile experience.

3. Thickness and Shape

Guitar Pick Shapes

When shopping for an acoustic guitar pick, two of the most important things to consider are thickness and shape. These factors can have a huge effect on the tone and playability of your instrument, so it’s essential to think carefully when making a selection.

Thickness – known as ‘gauge’ – is critical when choosing a pick. They come in various gauges, from extra thin to ultra heavy. Depending on your preferred gauge, you’ll be rewarded with a bright or bass-heavy tone.

  • If you play rhythm guitar, opt for something within the 0.40mm to 0.59mm range—these picks will give you a brighter sound and more flexibility.
  • You’ll get a combination of brightness and bass-heaviness for med-weight picks from 0.60mm to 0.79mm.
  • But if you’re after something more suited to lead guitar playing, go for the heavier gauges, ranging from 0.80mm to 1.49mm– these thicker picks will give you greater control and accuracy.

The shape of the pick is another crucial factor in tone production. For instance, tri-tip picks with rounded tips are often the go-to for producing a warm sound on an acoustic guitar, thanks to their mellow attack. Conversely, if you’re seeking enhanced accuracy and control, a pick with a sharper tip is The way to go, as it will produce a brighter tone.

So, when getting the perfect sound from your acoustic guitar, pay attention to gauge and shape!

4. Ease of Use

Ease of use is another crucial factor when choosing the right pick for your acoustic guitar.

Different materials and shapes can affect how easy it is to play, so take some time to test a few options before settling on one. Carefully check each guitar’s intonation and action to ensure it’s comfortable.

5. Price

The difficulty of making them determines the price of picks. Synthetic picks, which can be produced in sheets, are generally cheaper than those made from natural materials since they require less effort to craft.

Carbon fiber picks usually cost more since creating them requires more skill and expertise.

Using a Guitar Pick to Play Acoustic Benefit

A guitar pick, also known as a plectrum, is essential when it comes to playing acoustic guitar. Without a pick you can still strum with your fingers, but with much less control over dynamics, which can limit the sound and style of music you’re able to produce.

Using a pick allows you to create:

Increased Volume and Projection

Increased Volume And Projection

Acoustic guitars typically have a hollow body and produce sound through the vibration of the strings.

Using a guitar pick, you can achieve a more pronounced attack and generate a louder sound than playing with your fingers alone.

Enhanced Clarity and Articulation

When you use a pick, your picking hand can achieve more precision and control over individual notes. The pick’s firmness and uniform shape allow for consistent strikes on the strings, resulting in improved clarity and articulation of your playing.

This can be advantageous for intricate fingerpicking patterns, fast strumming, or playing complex chords with distinct note separation.

Different Tonal Possibilities

Did you know that different picks can produce completely different sounds? That’s right! The material, shape, and size of your pick all affect the tone of your playing.

For example, a thin pick will create brighter tones, while thicker picks are more suitable for producing warmer, ‘darker’ sounds.

Reduced Strain on Fingers

Reduced Strain On Fingers

A guitar pick can also make it easier to hold down chords with less effort. When playing without a pick, the thumb and fingers of your strumming hand are constantly pressing against the strings.

This can cause fatigue and strain on the muscles and joints of your hands over time. You get more leverage with a pick and only need to apply pressure to the strings for fretting and picking lightly.

FAQ's

What type of guitar pick is best for acoustic?

The type of pick that works best for acoustic guitar depends on your playing style and preferred sound. Generally speaking, thinner picks are better suited to strumming and rhythm playing, while thicker picks tend to provide greater control when used for picking and soloing.

Picks made of materials such as celluloid, nylon, or Delrin are commonly used for acoustic guitars. The size and shape of the pick are also important factors to consider, as they can affect playability.

What thickness pick is best for acoustic?

For a versatile and all-purpose choice, a medium gauge pick with a thickness ranging between 0.60 mm and 0.80 mm would be suitable. This range should give you enough control and flexibility for lead and rhythm playing.

If you prefer to strum more heavily, then a heavier gauge pick of 1.00 mm or thicker would work best. If your goal is increased speed and articulation, then a lighter gauge pick around 0.50 mm would be the better choice.

What are the best picks for acoustic guitar strumming?

The best picks for acoustic guitar strumming are typically thicker picks, such as the Dunlop Tortex Standard or the Fender 351 Classic Celluloid. These picks provide a strong and consistent attack when strumming and can also help reduce finger fatigue. Thicker picks also produce a fuller sound when used for strumming.

What is the best pick thickness for acoustic guitar strumming?

Thinner picks between 0.45mm and 0.70mm are generally recommended when strumming an acoustic guitar. Thicker picks over 0.75mm may be better suited for those who pick more often than strum or have thicker strings.

Do thicker guitar picks sound better?

Thicker picks tend to produce a fuller sound due to their increased thickness. This is especially true when strumming, as thicker picks provide more surface area for the strings to interact with. Thicker picks are also often favored by advanced guitarists as they offer improved control and precision when executing complex picking techniques like pinch harmonics or sweep picking.

Interesting selection of picks here, but I’m not convinced the material of a pick has as much of an impact on acoustic guitar sound as you’re suggesting. In my years of collecting and playing, I’ve found that technique and the guitar itself far outweigh the influence of pick material. Though, I acknowledge the comfort and playability factor of different picks can enhance one’s playing experience. Would be curious to hear more about how you reached your conclusions on this.

This article was a game changer for me. I’ve been practicing acoustic guitar for a few months now, and I had no idea how much of an impact a simple pick could make on my playing style. Trying out the Dunlop Tortex based on your recommendation and already noticing a difference in control and sound quality. Thank you for the insights!

Hey Lewis Turner, loved the list of picks you put together. Just wondering, do you think the thickness of a pick really makes that much of a difference when playing acoustically? I’ve always stuck with whatever I could find, but you’ve got me curious.

but in my experience, yeah, thickness changes a lot. Thinner picks for strumming, thicker for picking. Makes quite a difference in sound.
