Ready to choose your very own ukulele?

With so many options, it can feel like a tough decision. But don’t worry.

I was in the same boat as you once, and I hope my experience and advice will not only save you a little bit of cash but also improve the quality of your decision-making!

My comprehensive buyer’s guide is here to help you choose the perfect ukulele for you!

Choosing A Ukulele

Many factors must be considered when picking out your ukulele, from the type of wood used to the instrument’s size. But don’t fret (sorry…)!

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, my guide will give you all the necessary information to make the right choice.

Table of Contents

Understanding Ukulele Types

When choosing the best ukulele for you, it’s important to understand the different types available.

Here are the four main types of ukuleles:

Soprano Ukulele

The soprano ukulele is the smallest and most popular type of ukulele. It's known for its bright and cheerful sound and is perfect for beginners and those who want a traditional ukulele sound. The typical size of a soprano ukulele is 21 inches, and usually has 12-15 frets.

Concert Ukulele

The concert ukulele is slightly larger than the soprano ukulele, with a typical size of 23 inches. It has a fuller and warmer sound than the soprano, making it a popular choice for intermediate players. The concert ukulele usually has 15-20 frets and is a great option for those who want a balance between size and sound.

Tenor Ukulele

The tenor ukulele is even larger than the concert ukulele, with a typical size of 26 inches. It has a deeper and richer sound than the soprano and concert ukuleles, making it perfect for those who want to play more complex music styles. The tenor ukulele usually has 17-19 frets and is a great option for those who want a larger instrument without sacrificing sound quality.

Baritone Ukulele

The baritone ukulele is the largest and most unique type, with a typical size of 30 inches. It has a deep and mellow sound similar to a classical guitar, making it an excellent option for those who want to play more complex music styles. The baritone ukulele usually has 18-21 frets and is a great option for those who own acoustic guitars and want a ukulele that's closer in sound to a guitar. They may also go for a guitalele, which allows them to play chords they already know.

Choosing the Right Ukulele for Your Needs

When choosing the right ukulele for your needs, there are a few things to consider.

Whether you’re a beginner, an advanced player, or even a guitar player looking to try something new, different types of ukuleles will suit your needs.

For Beginners

You might want to start with a soprano ukulele if you’re a beginner. These are the smallest and most common types of ukulele, perfect for learning.

They’re also the most affordable, so they’re a great choice if you’re not sure if you want to commit to playing the ukulele long-term.

When choosing a beginner ukulele, look for one that’s easy to play and has good intonation. You might also consider getting a ukulele bundle with a case, tuner, and other accessories.

For Advanced Players

If you’re an advanced player, you might want to consider concert or tenor ukuleles. These are slightly larger than soprano ukuleles and have a fuller sound. They’re also more expensive, so they’re a better choice if you’re serious about playing the ukulele.

When choosing an advanced ukulele, look for a solid wood top, back, and sides. This will give you a better tone and sustain. You might also want to consider getting a ukulele with a cutaway, allowing you to play higher notes on the fretboard.

For Guitar Players

If you’re a guitar player looking to try something new, you might want to consider a baritone ukulele. These are the largest type of ukulele and are tuned like the top four strings of a guitar.

This makes them a great choice if you’re familiar with guitar chords and want to try something new. When choosing baritone ukuleles, look for one with good intonation and a balanced tone. You might also want to consider getting a ukulele with a pickup to plug it into an amplifier.

Materials and Construction

The materials and construction are two important factors when choosing the best ukulele. Let’s look at the wood types and fretboard materials commonly used in ukulele construction.

Wood Types

The type of wood used in the construction of a ukulele can significantly impact its sound. Here are some of the most common wood types used in ukulele construction:

Spruce

A popular choice for the top of a ukulele, spruce offers a bright and clear sound with good projection

Mahogany

Often used for the body of a ukulele or acoustic guitar, mahogany provides a warm and mellow tone with good sustain.

Koa

A traditional Hawaiian wood, koa is highly prized for its beautiful grain patterns and rich, warm tone.

Sengon

A more affordable alternative to mahogany, sengon is a popular choice for entry-level ukuleles. It's worth noting that some ukuleles are made with solid wood, while others use laminated wood. Solid wood ukuleles offer a richer, more complex sound but can also be more expensive.

Fretboard Materials

The material used for the fretboard can also impact the sound and playability of a ukulele. Here are some common fretboard materials:

Rosewood

A popular choice for its durability and smooth feel, rosewood is often used for the fretboard and bridge.

Ebony

Ebony is another durable and smooth material known for its bright and clear tone.

Maple

While not as commonly used as rosewood or ebony, maple can provide a bright and snappy tone.

Tuning and Strings

When tuning your ukulele, it’s important to get it right to achieve the best sound possible.

The standard tuning for a ukulele is G-C-E-A, with the G string being the thickest and the A string being the thinnest.

However, there are other tunings you can try, such as D tuning, which is becoming increasingly popular.

In terms of strings, most ukuleles come with nylon strings.

The Number Of Strings On A Ukulele

Nylon strings are great for beginners as they are easy on the fingers and produce a warm, mellow sound. Aquila Nylgut strings are popular for those who want a more traditional sound.

They’re made from a synthetic material that mimics the sound of gut strings and are known for their excellent intonation and projection.

It’s important to note that not all strings are suitable for all ukuleles. Some ukuleles are designed with nylon strings, while others are designed with steel strings.

Be sure to check your ukulele’s specifications before changing the strings.

Tips on How to Take Care of Your Ukulele

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your ukulele stays in excellent condition and continues to sound its best for years.

Keep it clean

Wipe down your ukulele with a soft cloth after each use to remove any dirt or sweat that may have accumulated. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the finish.

Store it properly

When unused, store your ukulele in a dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Consider using a humidifier to maintain the proper moisture level in the wood.

Change strings regularly

Over time, the strings on your ukulele will wear out and lose their tone. Change them regularly to keep your ukulele sounding its best.

Tune it regularly

Keep your ukulele in tune to ensure it sounds its best and prevent unnecessary stress on the strings and neck.

Protect it during transport:

Use a padded gig bag or hard case to protect your ukulele. Avoid leaving it in a hot car or exposing it to extreme temperatures.

Get it serviced by a professional

If you notice any issues with your ukulele, such as buzzing strings or a warped neck, take it to a professional. They can make necessary repairs and ensure your ukulele is in top condition.

While I find the digital tuner recommendation helpful, I must point out that many free tuning apps available can serve just as well for beginners not looking to invest too much from the get-go. Furthermore, when it comes to ukulele brands, I believe there’s an underestimated value in lesser-known brands that often provide excellent quality at a fraction of the cost. It’d be beneficial for readers to explore these options as well, as not everyone has access to the brands listed or may be working within tighter budgets.

I gotta say, this is one of the most comprehensive guides I’ve stumbled upon. I’ve owned a Kala KA-15S for years and it’s still my favorite. Totally agree with its recommendation. For anyone on the fence, you won’t regret a Kala. Also, props to Lewis Turner for the detailed materials section – not everyone talks about how crucial wood types and construction are.

Absolutely, the acoustics of the wood can make or break the sound. It’s fascinating to see how material science applies to musical instruments.

I appreciated the breakdown of ukulele types, especially since I’m considering adding more to my classroom. Could you recommend which of the listed models would be most durable for daily use by children? Thanks in advance!
