Playing guitar offers a truly unique experience. It’s a moment to unwind, showcase your personality, and craft lovely tunes.

But how comfortable it is can depend on the type of guitar strap you’re using.

A good guitar strap should be comfortable, durable, and provide enough support to your instrument.

I’ve researched and gathered a list of the most comfortable guitar straps on the market today, so you can just sit back and relax while playing your favorite tunes.

Table of Contents

A Brief History of Guitar Strap

Guitar straps have been integral to the guitar-playing experience for over a century. In the early days, straps were simple leather pieces attached to the instrument with screws or nails.

As music evolved and electric guitars became popular, so did adjustable strap systems that allowed musicians to find their perfect fit.

Guitar Strap Brief History

In the 1950s and 1960s, colorful and stylish guitar straps became fashionable, showing artists their unique styles. Later, new materials and technologies created even more comfortable and reliable straps.

Today, a wide array of guitar straps are available that cater to all types of players, tastes, and playing styles. With such a long and varied history, it’s no surprise that guitar straps are so important in making music.

Benefits of Using Guitar Strap

Guitar straps offer several benefits for both beginner and experienced guitar players.

The most obvious is the ability to support your instrument while playing, freeing up your hands and giving you greater control over your sound.

Other advantages include better posture while playing, improved posture while standing, and a more comfortable experience overall.

Benefits Of Using Guitar Strap 2

The right guitar strap can also help with your overall sound, allowing you to move the instrument around more freely and provide a better balance of resonance and feedback.

Finally, having the right strap makes transitioning between different playing positions, like sitting and standing, easier.

What to Look for in a Guitar Strap

Top Tip
Guitar Strap

Type of Instrument

When choosing the best guitar strap for your instrument, it’s essential to consider the type of guitar you’re using. Different instruments require different types of straps.

For instance, electric guitars are usually heavier than acoustic guitars or bass guitars. A strong leather strap with a wide back is recommended for playing an electric guitar.

Leather straps are also a good choice for acoustic and bass guitars since they provide more support for heavier instruments.

For classical guitar players, a classic and comfortable cotton strap is ideal. Cotton straps are lightweight and non-slip, perfect for long playing sessions.

Adjustability

A good guitar strap should also be adjustable. This will allow you to adjust the length of the strap to get it just right for your playing style.

An adjustable strap also allows you to move higher or lower on the neck, which can be helpful for certain playing styles.

You should look for straps that have easy-to-manipulate slots or buttons when adjusting the length so that you can make quick and precise adjustments.

Guitar Strap

Most straps adjust between 40 and 60 inches, making them suitable for most players. However, if you are a taller guitarist or prefer to wear your guitar farther down on your body, you may want to look for an extra-long strap that adjusts even longer than the standard length.

In any case, it is important to ensure that the strap you have chosen is adjustable and fits your body size to provide maximum comfort while playing.

Locking Mechanism

Guitar straps have unique knobs called strap buttons on either side of the guitar's body. When attaching a strap, the holes go over these knobs to secure it onto the instrument. Over time, this can cause wear and tear on the material around the hole, making it more prone to slipping or breaking off altogether.

To avoid this, some guitarists opt for strap locks that go over the button after the strap has been secured, ensuring it won't fall off while playing. Strap locks can be bought separately, or they may come with specific straps, although the latter usually increases the overall cost of the product. Whatever option you choose, you must ensure the strap locks are strong and durable.

Aesthetic & Size

As important as the function of the strap is, it's also essential to consider its aesthetic when picking out a new one. After all, you want your guitar strap to look great with your instrument and the clothes you wear while performing. Regarding size, there are two main types: short and long straps. Short straps fit best for guitars with a shorter scale length, while long straps are best suited for instruments with longer scales. Measure the distance from the bottom of your guitar's body to the top of your head to determine which size is right for you. Finally, consider the colors available when selecting a strap. Many brands offer straps in various colors, ranging from muted earth tones to vibrant hues. This allows you to find the perfect shade that matches your style and personality.

Brand

When choosing a guitar strap, choosing a reputable brand is important. Although many generic and inexpensive straps are available, these often don't provide the same level of quality as branded products. Look for brands known for their durability, comfort and ergonomics to ensure you get the best product possible.

How to Attach Guitar Strap

Knowing how to attach a guitar strap properly is important if you’re a guitar player. A secure strap will help make playing your instrument more straightforward and comfortable.

Two main methods for connecting a guitar strap are two buttons or one button and a string loop.

Guitar Strap

Using two Buttons

The most common way to attach a strap is with two buttons. The lower button is typically installed at the bottom of the guitar on the strap peg.

Depending on your instrument, the second button can be placed near the top shoulder or behind the neck where it meets the body.

Using two buttons gives you added support and stability and a customized fit that allows for easier access to higher frets. This two-button setup is the most popular choice for players of all skill levels.

It’s also the perfect option if you’re looking to add a bit of flair to your instrument with decorative strap buttons.

Using one button and a string

Best Guitar Straps

An alternative approach used by some players is to have one strap button installed on the bottom end of the guitar and then attach a string loop onto the guitar’s headstock. This design puts more pressure on the neck joint, so it may not be ideal if you’re playing an acoustic or electric acoustic with a fragile neck joint.

It is a good option if your guitar has no extra hole near the bridge for installing a second button. To do this:

  1. Start by securing the strap to the bottom pin.

  2. Use a strong string or fishing line looped around the headstock and connected to the other end of the strap.

  3. Make sure it is firmly knotted and won’t come undone while playing.

With this setup, you should still feel balanced with the guitar’s weight centered on the body.

Strap Locks

For some, playing their guitar without a strap lock can be a nerve-wracking experience. There’s nothing worse than having your axe slip off while you’re shredding your favorite solo or riff! Strap locks help keep your guitar securely on your shoulder and prevent it from slipping out of position during those intense moments.

They are also much easier to put on and take off than standard straps, so you won’t need to fuss with them during each gig.

Most strap locks use a simple “push-and-twist” mechanism that takes only a few seconds to secure or remove your guitar from the strap.

FAQ's

What guitar straps are most comfortable?

The most comfortable guitar straps provide enough padding and support to ensure you can play your instrument comfortably without any strain on your shoulders or arms. Some of the best options include Levy’s Right Height Garment Leather Ergonomic Padded strap, Ernie Ball Regular Neoprene Polylock Strap, and D’Addario Joe Satriani Planet Lock Guitar Strap, all of which offer ergonomic designs for maximum comfort. Additionally, consider adding a strap lock and tuner to your setup to ensure optimal performance.

Are wider guitar straps more comfortable?

Wider guitar straps can be more comfortable, providing additional support and stability. They also help evenly distribute the weight of your instrument across your shoulder. A wider strap is usually padded, making it even more comfortable to use while playing. However, if you have a smaller body type or prefer less bulk on your shoulder, you may opt for a thinner strap instead.

What makes a guitar strap comfortable?

It all comes down to the material, padding, and length. Guitar straps come in various materials, including leather, nylon, and canvas. Leather is often considered the most comfortable option due to its softness, durability, and breathability. Padding helps further cushion the shoulder from the weight of your instrument while playing. Length can also play a factor in finding the perfect strap. Longer straps allow for a greater range of motion, while shorter straps are great for those who prefer to keep their guitar close at hand.

Why does my guitar strap hurt my neck?

Your guitar strap may be too tight or too long, causing it to pull on the neck area. You may also need to adjust the positioning of the strap so that your instrument sits at a comfortable level when you’re playing. Additionally, ensure you use a padded, ergonomically designed strap for optimal comfort.

What are guitar straps made of?

Guitar straps come in various materials, such as leather, denim, nylon, cotton, and polyester. Depending on what kind of look you’re going for, some straps also feature colorful design elements or decorations like studs, rivets, and patches. If you prefer a classic vintage guitar strap look, consider opting for an all-leather guitar strap or one made with leather and fabric.

Are Expensive Guitar Straps Worth It?

Yes, investing in an expensive guitar strap has several benefits. Not only will it last longer and look better, but a high-quality strap can also help improve your sound quality. Thicker, wider straps provide more support for the instrument, allowing for better balance and enabling you to move around freely while playing. Expensive straps are also often made with ergonomic designs, making them more comfortable to wear for long periods. Cheap strap alternatives may provide a less desirable experience, so it’s best to invest in a quality strap that can guarantee your satisfaction.

Fascinating read, but let’s be honest, nothing beats the charm and reliability of a well-worn leather strap passed down from generations. All these newfangled materials can’t match up to history.

Is it easy to adjust? I’m kinda short and struggle with most straps fitting right.

While the article provides a comprehensive overview of guitar straps, I believe it slightly overlooks the importance of material durability and its effect on the lifespan of a strap. From personal experience, straps made of lesser-quality materials tend to wear out much faster, especially at the points of most stress – where the strap meets the guitar. It would be beneficial for readers, particularly those new to performing or purchasing their first strap, to understand the relationship between material quality, durability, and ultimately, security for their instrument.

Really diggin’ the section on the most comfortable guitar straps. I’ve been using a basic nylon strap for years, not thinking much about it, until recently when I started playing longer gigs with my band. The Ernie Ball neoprene strap sounds like a game changer, especially for those marathon rehearsal sessions. Appreciate the detailed write-up, Lewis Turner! Always on the lookout for gear that makes playing more about the music and less about the discomfort.
