There are various alto saxophones to choose from in the market today, but having play-tested and reviewed the most popular (and even tested some of them with small children, so we know they really are hard-wearing!), we’ve come up with a guide to the 12 most popular.
Alto Saxophone Buying Guide - How to choose a saxophone
When purchasing a saxophone, the price is probably the biggest factor. Saxophones can be expensive instruments, and if you’re just dipping your toe into the waters of saxophone playing, you might want to buy the cheapest instrument you can find. Unfortunately, this can be a false economy because an instrument that doesn’t work very well can be off-putting to even the most committed student.
This short guide aims to take you through the various options for buying a new alto sax, so that you can make the right choice.
Materials
Alto saxophones are generally made with yellow brass, which gives them the bright sound we love. They can be plated with different metals to give your instrument a different look and feel.
Size of the Tip Opening and the Chamber
Your alto saxophone will come with a mouthpiece already supplied, but many people prefer an alternative that better fits their playing style and sound.
Mouthpieces come in a variety of materials and with differing tip openings (the space between the reed and the mouthpiece) and chamber shapes, all of which will affect the sound quality. If you play mostly classical music, you’ll want a small tip opening of a 4 or 5, with a horseshoe-shaped chamber. If it’s jazz music that you enjoy, you’ll want a bigger tip opening of 7 or 8, and a large chamber for a huge sound.
Baffle
Some mouthpieces will also have a baffle inside: a step or slope inside the mouthpiece that changes how the air flows for an edgy jazz sound. The higher the step, the more resistance.
Keys
The more expensive alto saxophones will have mother-of-pearl inlays over the keys. These are less likely to corrode than plastic alternatives and also provide a little more grip for your fingers.
Lacquer Types
Although most saxophones are made with a gold lacquered body, there are various options to choose from if you like the look of something else. Old saxophones are prized for their vintage style, and some new instruments are even made without a lacquer finish to emulate that older feel.
Other instruments have a black lacquer finish, or you might like the look of a silver-plated alto saxophone. Experiments have been done to determine whether the lacquer makes a difference to the sound, but no real conclusions have been reached, so it’s really down to personal preference.
Mouthpiece
Mouthpieces can be made from a variety of materials. Most alto saxophone beginners will start off with a plastic or hard rubber mouthpiece, but if you want a little extra zip to your sound or you prefer a bright tone, you might consider a metal one.
These tend to be more expensive, but they are extremely long-lasting – in fact some of the most sought-after mouthpieces were made in the 1950s. They pop up on eBay from time to time, but can cost almost the same as the saxophone itself!
Some companies are even starting to make a 3D printed molded mouthpiece, so the player can specify the exact dimensions they want. However, if you’re just looking to replace the mouthpiece that came in the box, then try Vandoren and Selmer for good options to take your playing up a level.
The reed you choose is also important – a beginner sax player will choose a soft reed for easy blowing, but a professional alto saxophonist will want a harder reed to reach those high altissimo notes. A beginner usually starts with 1.5 strength reeds, and gradually works their way up to a 3 or 3.5 as your sound improves. Vandoren and Rico are the most popular brands, but there are many more to choose from, all promising a different sound or feel.
Ligature
Any alto saxophone you buy will come with a basic ligature (usually a metal one with two screws to hold the reed in place), but as with all of the other parts of a saxophone, they can be changed or upgraded to suit your personal preference.
Many people choose to purchase leather ligatures that produce a warm tone but you can also buy metal ones that will exert an even pressure across the reed for a quick response. Rovner and BG are good brands to look for if you want to switch out your ligature.
Weight
Most alto saxophones are a standard weight, but the cheaper models are sometimes slightly lighter. The Nuovo jSax is made of plastic and is a light option for very small children.
