Seeking the best digital pianos? You’re in luck! We’ve got a list of 24 **weighted 88 key digital pianos** (also known as digital keyboards) to help you choose the perfect one for your needs.

Many different brands and models of 88-key digital pianos are available on the market, so it can be challenging to know which one is right for you.

In this article, we will look at some of the best digital pianos currently available and help you decide which one is right for you.

Table of Contents

Advantages of weighted keys

A digital piano with weighted keys means that the keys have been designed to mimic the resistance felt when playing an acoustic piano. A weighted action adds realism to your playing experience (as acoustic pianos have these types of keyboard actions) and can make Digital pianos feel more like traditional acoustic pianos.

The extra weight in the keys also provides a greater level of resistance, which can be beneficial for those who are looking to improve their piano playing skills.

Consider the features you require on your piano

When choosing an 88 key digital piano, it is important to consider what features you require. Do you need a piano that is portable? One that has a built-in metronome? One with a weighted keyboard?

Some of the other features that you may want to consider include:

  • The number of polyphony voices available
  • The types of sounds and tones available
  • The amount of memory available for storing your recordings
  • Whether the piano has a USB port for connecting to a computer
  • The weight and dimensions of the piano
Piano Brand Ranking

There are two main types of digital pianos: those with weighted keys and those without. If you are looking for a digital piano that feels like a traditional acoustic piano or grand pianos, then you will want to choose a piano with weighted keys.

Best brands of weighted 88 key digital piano

For over 80 years, Kawai has been producing pianos. One of the most renowned brands in the business, they are one of the best-known brands.

Their sound quality and sample playback distinguish them from the competition.

Gear4music

Dp-12 By Gear4Music Review

Gear4music sells a wide range of brands, including all the ones mentioned above, but it also has its own brand of instruments. Can their digital pianos compete with the best manufacturers listed above? No.

However, I’ve included them on this list even though they can’t match up to the other companies because, as a starter beginner keyboard piano, they are superb and very cost-effective.

The brand to avoid - Casio

Finally, you’ll observe that I didn’t include any Casio keyboards on my list.

We dislike the Casio brand because we feel they are poorly constructed (compared to others), and the sounds are far less realistic than those of other prominent manufacturers.

Best models for a beginner player

We think a brilliant model of digital piano for a complete beginner is the SDP-2 Portable Stage Piano by Gear4music.

It has 88 fully weighted keys, so they have a realistic feel and respond just like an acoustic piano would. There are ten different voices to choose from, including a grand piano and electric piano, as well as 100 rhythms to play along with.

You can even connect your headphones and practise without disturbing anyone else.

If you’re looking for a digital piano with slightly more features, the Yamaha P-125 Digital Piano is also a great option. It has a weighted keyboard, as well as grand piano and electric piano voices.

Sdp-2 Portable Stage Piano By Gear4Music Review

You can split the keyboard into two so that each hand can play a different voice or layer them together to create new sounds.

There are 191 different Rhythms to choose from, making this perfect for anyone who wants to experiment with different styles of music. You can even connect your smartphone or tablet and use apps to help you learn how to play.

What are the important features to have for a beginner pianist?

There are a few things to consider when purchasing a digital piano for a piano-playing beginner. Some of the most important features include weighted keys, multiple voices and tones, and split keyboard functionality.

Here is a list of things to consider when purchasing a digital piano for a beginner:

  • Fully weighted keys: A digital piano with a weighted action will feel more like an acoustic piano, which can be helpful for beginners who are transitioning from a traditional keyboard. It’s for this reason we don’t recommend a semi-weighted action, as although they may be easier to play, a semi-weighted keyboard will be harder to transition to a real acoustic piano.
  • Touch sensitivity: Touch-sensitive keys refers to how the digital piano responds to different levels of pressure on the keys. Some pianos, including electric pianos, have multiple settings for touch sensitivity, which can be helpful for adjusting to different playing styles.
  • Polyphony: Polyphony is the number of notes that a digital piano can play simultaneously. Beginners may not need a large polyphony, but it can be helpful for more advanced players.
  • Number of voices: The number of voices refers to the different sounds that a digital piano can produce. A beginner may not need many voices, but it can be helpful to have more voices available as you become more advanced.
  • USB connectivity: USB connectivity allows you to connect your digital piano to a computer or other devices. This can be helpful for recording your playing or using educational software
  • Built-in speakers: Built-in speakers allow you to hear your digital piano without needing external speakers. This can be helpful for practising without disturbing others.
  • Headphone jack: A headphone jack allows you to connect headphones to your digital piano. This can be helpful for practising without disturbing others or if you want to use headphones with educational software.

Best models for the accomplished player

What are the best digital pianos for an accomplished player?

This question does not have a definitive answer, as it depends on the specific needs and preferences of the player in question.

However, certain features are considered essential for an advanced player, such as fully weighted keys, many voices and effects, and an extensive range of connectivity options.

In this list below, we will take a look at some digital pianos on the market that offer these features to help you narrow down your choices and find the perfect instrument for your needs.

Best models for value for money

What is the best model bringing value for money?

When looking for a digital piano, it is crucial to find one that offers value for money in your price range. There are many factors to consider when determining the value of a digital piano, such as the quality of the sound, the feel of the keys, and the overall functionality of the instrument.

Yamaha P125

1. Yamaha P125 Digital Piano
The Yamaha P125 is a great option for those looking for a digital piano with weighted keys and a realistic feel.

This model also features a wide range of voices and sounds, as well as built-in rhythm and accompaniment functions.

Gdp-500 By Gear4Music Review

2. GDP-500 by Gear4music
If you’re looking for a digital piano that offers value for money, look no further than the GDP-500 by Gear4music.

This digital piano is packed with features and comes with weighted keys, a built-in metronome, and 1,200 different voices to choose from. Is it a cheap instrument? Absolutely not. But this section is about value for money, not a low budget, and versus other models, this instrument punches way above its weight.

Korg G1 Air Review.jpg

3. Korg G1 Air
The Korg G1 Air Digital Piano is a brilliant digital piano and is also reasonably priced! It offers weighted keys, which is essential for a realistic feel.

The piano has a great sound and is very affordable. It is also lightweight and one of the best portable keyboards, making it perfect for gigging musicians.

Best models on a tight budget

What is the best digital piano if you’re on a tight budget?

We all know that digital pianos can be pretty expensive, but is it still possible to find an excellent digital piano?

The answer is yes! There are several digital pianos that are very affordable yet still offer features that are important for any serious pianist.

Dp-12 By Gear4Music Review

1. DP-12 by Gear4music
This digital piano is very affordable yet still offers features that are important for any serious musician. Like most other digital pianos, it has 88 weighted keys. It also has a number of other features, such as a metronome, transpose function, and MIDI connectivity.

The only downside is that it is not portable, so you’ll need to keep it in one place. But overall, the DP-12 by Gear4music is a great choice for those looking for a quality digital piano on a budget.

Yamaha Ydp-145 Review.jpg

2. Yamaha YDP-145
The Yamaha YDP-145 is one of the nicest digital pianos under 500. The sound quality is very good, making it a great choice for beginners and intermediate players alike. And the keyboard action is excellent, giving the instrument a more realistic feel.

The keys are also touch-sensitive, meaning they will respond differently depending on how hard you press them. This makes it possible to create a wider range of sounds. It also comes with a USB port, which allows you to connect it to a computer.

Korg Xe20

3. Korg XE20
The Korg XE20 is a digital piano that is very affordable. It has 88 weighted keys, which makes it feel more like a traditional piano. It also has a lot of features, making it a great choice for beginner and intermediate pianists. The only downside is that it does not have a lot of polyphony, so it may not be suitable for advanced pianists.

Nonetheless, the Korg XE20 is a great digital piano for the price

Accessories for the piano

Although accessories are not as important as the piano itself, and most digital pianos come with all the accessories you need to get started (including a sustain pedal and power adapter) – there are some things you’ll want to look at purchasing to help your learning journey go a little more smoothly.

  • A metronome: Keeping time is crucial for any musician, and a metronome can help you stay on beat. This is especially important when learning new pieces or practising difficult passages. It’s a brilliant little tool for the beginner through to advanced pianist.  The best metronome on the market is this Korg.
  • Piano bench: It’s really important you get a high adjustable piano stool. This means you’ll be able to sit correctly at the keyboard, and not only will this help your technique, but it’ll also stop you from getting injuries. And if you’re wondering how tall a piano bench should be, or what to buy, then we have a dedicated article here to show you.
  • Headphones: One of the massive advantages of a Digital Piano over an acoustic is the ability to play ‘silently.  Pop on some headphones, and away you go without disturbing others around you.  We have a great article here to help you choose some decent headphones.
  • Keyboard Case: If you’re planning on transporting your digital piano or just want to keep it dust-free when not in use, then a keyboard case is a must. Different types are available depending on the size of your keyboard, and some even come with wheels for easy transport.

How to care for your piano

Your piano is a big investment, so it’s important to take care of it. Regular cleaning and maintenance will keep it in good condition and prevent damage.

Here are some tips on how to care for your piano:

  • Keep the keys clean by dusting them with a soft cloth or brush. You can also use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove dust.
  • Clean the body of the piano with a soft cloth or duster. Be careful not to scratch the surface.
  • A digital piano is electric, so never place cups or liquids on the surface. It’s just not worth the risk!
By following these tips, you can keep your piano looking and sounding great for many years to come.

FAQ's

What is the best 88 key weighted keyboard?

This is a difficult question to answer. It really depends on what you are looking for and what your budget is. If you are looking for a great keyboard under $500, then we would recommend the Korg G1 Air Digital Keyboard. If you are looking for something with more features, then we would recommend the Yamaha P125 Digital Piano

What is the best digital piano with weighted keys?

This is a question that gets asked a lot, and there is no easy answer. There are a lot of great digital pianos out, but it really depends on what you’re looking for in a piano and what your budget is.  Always try and get the option that best fits your budget.

Do you really need 88 key piano?

No, you don’t need an 88 key piano to be a good musician. In fact, many digital pianos and keyboards have fewer than 88 notes and are perfectly fine for beginners and intermediate players. The important thing is that the keyboard has a weighted action, which simulates the feel of a real piano. So if you’re just starting out, don’t worry about getting an 88 key piano. Just get one with weighted piano keys, and you’ll be fine

What is the best keyboard with weighted keys?

There are a few things to consider when purchasing a digital keyboard with weighted keys. The first is the type of music you’ll be playing. If you’re mostly going to be playing classical or jazz, then you’ll want to look for a piano with Ivory Touch or Ebony Feel keys with a hammer action. These keys have a more realistic feel. For pop or rock music, you might want to consider a keyboard with synthesis capabilities. This way, you’ll be able to create your own unique sounds.

What are stage pianos?

Stage pianos are a type of digital piano that is portable, hard-wearing, and used a lot on the stage! Stage pianos tend to have a different price point and usually focus on things like output options, touch response, removable pedals, multiple sockets for headphones – and not so much on things like backing tracks for home use.

Thank you Robert for your interesting reviews. I’m just surprised that there’s no mention of Dexibell? In my opinion they are amongst the best out there in every respect.
    Thanks,
    John.

      Hi John

Dexibell – yes, interesting brand. I quite like their Vivo S8 – however, I just don’t think it’s as good as other like for like across other brands. I suppose it’s just a personal opinion at the end of the day; and I can’t fit every digital piano into the list!

However, thanks for reading, taking and interest, and writing. Much appreciated!

      Robert

So pathetic to leave out Casio. The PX-S range have received outstanding reviews from all leading companies/experts with 3 year warranties. If you review products you need to keep updated with recent developments.

      Hi Bob

Thanks for the comment, and for challenging us. It’s Robert Emery here.

I don’t feel it’s pathetic to leave out Casio – it’s a choice I made. I still try out their instruments, and in fact, I’ve recently tried the Casio PX-S7000. It’s a beautiful looking instrument, and the stand is super-well made. But I’m sorry, against something in the same price range from Roland (the FP90X for example), the action just isn’t comparable. They’re a long-standing brand, just like the Yamaha, Roland and Kawai’s of this world; but they haven’t invested in their R&D department nearly as much as the other main brands. I’m not going to recommend an instrument just because it looks nice.

This article was only written a couple of months ago, so we are absolutely keeping up with recent developments.

As a pianist who trained at the Royal College of Music, and has a teaching lineage back to Beethoven, Mozart, Liszt and the most amazing pianist Claudio Arrau (my teachers teacher), I’m totally comfortable with my choice to leave Casio out; and feel I have the experience to make that decision. But if their action becomes level with the other mainstream outfits, then they’ll soon be listed on Ted’s List.

I have a PX-S3100 and really love all the features (as a retired music teacher and semi -professional organist) it was the only piano which suited my needs including having built-in accompaniment. Also Casio Music Space is an excellent addition for the various controllable factors it offers. Just my thoughts on the subject too!

Well I’m glad you’ve found an instrument that you’re happy with, as that’s the whole point after all. Thanks so much for engaging, and enjoy your PX-S3100!
