Guitar Stands vs Guitar Hanger: Which is Better?

Pros and Cons of Using Guitar Stands

When it comes to storing and displaying your guitar, using a guitar stand can have its pros and cons. Let’s delve into both sides to help you weigh the options.

PROS
  • Starting with the pros, a guitar stand offers convenience and accessibility. By keeping your guitar on a stand, you can easily grab it whenever you want to play without needing to search for it or take it out of its case. This saves time and keeps your instrument readily available for impromptu jamming sessions or practice sessions.
  • Using a stand allows your guitar to be visually displayed, showcasing its beauty and making it a part of your room decor. It becomes a conversation piece and a constant reminder to pick it up and make music.
CONS
  • One of the main concerns is the risk of accidents or damage. Placing your guitar on a stand means it's more exposed and susceptible to being knocked over, particularly if you have kids or pets in your home.
  • This increases the possibility of scratches, dents, or even a complete loss if knocked off a high stand.
  • If you live in an environment with high humidity or temperature fluctuations, leaving your guitar on a stand can expose it to these elements. This may result in damage to the wood, strings, or overall playability of the instrument over time.

To mitigate any risks and navigate the cons, there are certain precautions you can take.

Investing in a sturdy and stable guitar stand

For instance, investing in a sturdy and stable guitar stand designed to minimize the chances of accidental tipping can help ensure the safety of your instrument.

Placing the stand in a low-traffic area

Placing the stand in a low-traffic area of your home, away from hazards, can further reduce the risk of accidents.

Consider using a case or cover

If you live in a climate with extreme weather conditions, consider using a case or cover to protect your guitar when it’s not in use.

Pros and Cons of Using Guitar Wall Hangers

Guitar wall hangers can be a convenient and space-saving solution for musicians looking to display and store their guitars. There are several pros to using guitar wall hangers.

PROS
  • Firstly, they provide an easy and accessible way to showcase your guitars, allowing you to proudly display them as a decorative element in your home or studio. This can be especially appealing if you have multiple guitars that you want to rotate and show off.
  • Secondly, wall hangers keep your guitars off the ground, protecting them from potential damage or accidents. By hanging them securely on the wall, you reduce the risk of them getting knocked over or bumped into.
  • Finally, guitar wall hangers can be an effective way to save space, particularly if you have limited floor space or a crowded studio. They allow you to utilize vertical wall space, keeping your guitars within reach while maximizing the use of your available area.
CONS
  • One potential drawback is the limited accessibility they provide. If you store your guitars on the wall, you may find that it takes a little more effort to retrieve and put them away compared to keeping them in a traditional guitar stand.
  • If you have a large collection of guitars, you may need to install multiple wall hangers to accommodate all of them, which could increase the cost and complexity of installation.
  • Furthermore, it's important to note that guitar wall hangers require proper installation to ensure they're secure and can hold the weight of your guitars. If not installed correctly, there's a risk of the hanger falling off the wall and potentially causing damage to your instrument.
  • Lastly, some guitarists may have concerns about storing their guitars vertically, as it can potentially put more stress on the instrument's neck over time.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Guitar Wall Hanger

1. Materials

The first factor to consider is the material of the wall hanger.

Look for sturdy materials like metal or hardwood that can support the weight of your guitar without any risk of damage.

Avoid cheap plastic options that may be prone to break or warp over time.

Materials

2. Mounting Style

Different wall hangers use different mounting techniques, so it’s essential to choose one that suits your needs. There are two main types: wall-mounted and hook-mounted.

Wall-mounted hangers require screws or nails to secure them to the wall, providing a more permanent solution. Hook-mounted hangers are generally less invasive and can be attached to a variety of surfaces like drywall or wood panels without damaging them.

Mounting Style

3. Guitar Neck Support

One of the most critical factors when choosing a guitar wall hanger is the level of support it provides for your instrument.

Look for hangers with adjustable swivel arms or padded surfaces that cradle the neck of your guitar securely.

This will help prevent any accidental falls or damage.

Guitar Neck Support

4. Space Efficiency

If you have limited space, consider a wall hanger that can accommodate multiple guitars.

Some models feature multiple hooks, allowing you to store several instruments side by side,

Which is ideal for musicians with a collection of guitars.

Space Efficiency

5. Aesthetics

Let’s not forget about the aesthetic value! The wall hanger will be a visible part of your room’s decor, so choose one that matches your personal style.

You can find wall hangers in various designs, finishes, and colors.

Whether you prefer other guitar wall hangers with a sleek and modern look or a rustic and vintage vibe, there’s an option out there for you.

Aesthetics

6. Safety Features

Ensure your guitar wall hanger includes safety features such as,

Locking mechanisms or strap systems.

These will provide an extra layer of security,

Especially if you have curious children or pets in your home.

Safety Features

7. Installation Ease

Consider how easy it is to install the wall hanger.

Some options come with all the necessary mounting hardware, while others require additional purchases.

Make sure you choose a hanger that provides clear installation instructions and is manageable for your DIY skills.

How to Install a Guitar Wall Hanger

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools

Before you begin, make sure you have all the tools you’ll need for the installation. These typically include a stud finder, a pencil or marker, a drill, screws, and a screwdriver or power drill with the appropriate drill bit.

Step 2: Choose the Location

Decide where you want to hang your guitar. Ideally, you should choose a spot on a wall that is not susceptible to high humidity or temperature fluctuations. Also, consider the height and accessibility of the location. It’s usually best to hang the guitar at eye level or slightly higher for easy viewing and access.

Step 3: Find the Stud

Using a stud finder, locate the wall stud nearest to the chosen spot. Wall studs provide the necessary support to hold the weight of your guitar securely. Mark the edges of the stud with a pencil or marker.

Step 4: Position and Mark

Hold the baseplate of the guitar wall hanger against the wall, aligning it with the marked stud. Make sure it is level and adjust as needed. Once positioned correctly, mark the screw holes on the wall using a pencil.

Step 5: Pre-drill Holes

Using an appropriately sized drill bit, pre-drill holes on the marked spots in the wall. This will make it easier to insert the screws and prevent any damage to the walls.

Step 6: Mount the Hanger

Answer

Step 7: Hang the Guitar

Once the hanger is securely mounted, you can now hang your guitar. Gently lift your guitar, positioning the headstock into the hanger’s loop or cradle, depending on the design. Make sure that the guitar is straight and secure before letting go.

Step 8: Check for Stability

Give the guitar a gentle shake to test the stability of the guitar mount. If it feels secure and holds the weight of the guitar without any issues, you’re all set!

Best Guitar Wall Hanger
My Verdict

The best guitar wall hanger is the perfect solution for any young musician who wants to show off their guitar without sacrificing valuable floor space.

Not only is it a functional and practical addition to your room, but it also adds a touch of rockstar cool to your decor. Plus, it’s so easy to install that even your grandma could do it (well, maybe not, but you get the idea).

As I mentioned above, I have the Vicoustic VicDisplay and I totally love it. I think it looks fab, works really well, and it’s something I’m proud of.

So, whether you’re a seasoned guitar player or just starting out, the best guitar wall hanger is a must-have accessory for any true rockstar. Trust me, your guitar will thank you for it.

So, go ahead and give it a try – your walls (and your guitar) will never look better!

And remember, always keep on rockin’ in the free world!

FAQ's

What's the difference between a guitar stand and guitar hanger?

A guitar stand is a freestanding device that holds the guitar upright, while a guitar hanger is a device that attaches to the wall and holds the guitar by its headstock. The main difference is that a guitar stand takes up floor space, while a guitar hanger frees up floor space by attaching to the wall.

Why do you need a wall hanger for your guitar?

A wall hanger for your guitar is a great way to keep your guitar safe and secure while also freeing up valuable floor space. It also allows you to display your guitar as a piece of art, adding a touch of personality to your room.

Guitar stands vs. Guitar hangers- which is better?

The answer to whether guitar stands or guitar hangers are better depends on personal preference and the available space in your room. If you have limited floor space, a guitar hanger is a great option, but if you prefer to have your guitar within reach, a guitar stand may be the better choice.

Hugh Richardson, great article on guitar wall hangers! I’ve always leaned towards stands because I move my gear a lot for gigs. But after reading about the various wall hanger types, especially the locking hangers for extra security, I think I’m convinced to give wall hangers a shot in my home studio. The safety features and space efficiency points really hit home for me. Anyone hesitant about making the switch should definitely consider these benefits. Thanks for shedding light on this!

Regarding aesthetics, while I appreciate the attempt to reduce clutter with wall hangers, one cannot underestimate the visual impact—positive or negative—that such an installation could have on a room’s overall design. The choice between a wall hanger and a stand should also consider the room’s existing decor and how the instrument will complement or detract from it.

SlickVic87, you might want to look at padded hangers. They’re gentle on the finish.
