Whether you’re a beginner or just want to brush up on your skills, electric guitar basics are something every guitarist should understand. You can play your favorite songs in no time with a few tips and tricks.

If you want the quick answer as to what I think is the best option, then I’d say the Fender Player Stratocaster.  But I’m also super impressed with the other 14 instruments on this list!

This guide will help you find the best electric guitar for beginners, will introduce electric guitar basics and help you understand the fundamentals of playing an electric guitar.

How Much Does a Beginner Electric Guitar Cost

How Much Does A Beginner Electric Guitar Cost

An electric guitar can be an expensive purchase for a beginner. While affordable starter-level guitars are available for as little as $100, you may want to consider investing in a higher-quality instrument if you’re serious about learning and sticking with it.

Good entry-level electric guitars typically range from around £\$200 to £\$600, and more advanced models can cost upwards of £\$1000.

What Type of Electric Guitar Should a Beginner Get?
Choosing the right type of electric guitar

Choosing the right type of electric guitar as a beginner can significantly influence your learning experience. The two main types to consider are solid-body and semi-hollow or hollow-body guitars.

Solid-body guitars are versatile and suitable for various genres, making them popular for beginners. Semi-hollow or hollow-body guitars offer a different tone and are often favored by those interested in blues, jazz, or rockabilly styles.

What to Look for
When Buying an Electric Guitar for Beginners

Playing Style and Preference

Think about the genres you're most interested in playing and the type of sound you want to achieve.

For example, lean towards a guitar with humbucker pickups for a thicker and more aggressive tone if you prefer heavier music. Alternatively, a guitar with single-coil pickups might be a better fit if you're into cleaner tones or want to experiment with different sounds.

Materials and Build

When shopping for an electric guitar, paying attention to the materials used in its construction is important. The body should be made from solid wood such as ash, alder, or mahogany, and the neck should be bolt-on or set in with a truss rod for adjusting the action.

The frets should also be well-finished and free of sharp edges. The hardware should be solid metal, with sealed tuning machines and a securely mounted bridge to the body.

Electronics

The electronics of an electric guitar, including pickups, controls, and wiring, significantly impact its sound and versatility. Beginner guitars often come with standard pickups, typically offering a decent range of tones.

Some guitars may have more advanced electronics, such as coil-splitting or built-in effects. Consider your desired sound and explore options for an electric guitar that suits your needs.

Sound Quality

For most electric guitars and amps, the sound quality depends on the pickups. Single-coil pickups produce a brighter sound, while humbuckers are fuller and warmer-sounding.

When shopping for an electric guitar, pay attention to how the instrument sounds when strumming it unplugged. It should have a warm tone with good sustain and resonance.

Brand Reputation

While brand reputation shouldn't be the sole factor in your decision, it can provide insight into a guitar's overall quality and reliability.

Established guitar brands often have a history of producing instruments that meet specific standards.

However, newer or lesser-known brands may also offer excellent options at more affordable prices. Researching different brands, reading reviews, and seeking advice from experienced players can guide you toward reputable choices.

Tips for Beginners Electric Guitar Players

Proper Guitar Posture and Hand Placement

Proper posture and hand placement are the first and most important steps to playing an electric guitar.

  1. When sitting, ensure your back is straight and firmly planted on the ground with your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Place the guitar comfortably on your lap so that its neck points outwards towards you at an angle.
  3. Your right hand should be placed above the sound hole, just below the line of the strings on the fretboard.
  4. Your left hand should be placed near the bridge, with your thumb resting on the neck and all your fingers flat across the strings.
The Importance of Regular Guitar Maintenance

If you want to get the most out of your beginner’s electric guitar ever, keeping it in good condition is essential.

  1. A well-maintained guitar will stay in tune longer and sound better than one that isn’t looked after.
  2. Regularly clean your strings with a dry cloth and change them when worn or rusted.
  3. Check your guitar for any signs of damage, such as cracking, chipping, or discoloration, and replace any worn parts.
When to Upgrade for a Professional Electric Guitar?

If you have been playing guitar for a while and have achieved an intermediate skill level, it may be time to upgrade to a professional electric guitar.

Professional guitars are typically made from higher-quality materials and offer better sound quality. They also often come with additional features such as pickups and tremolos.

FAQ's

Is an electric guitar good for beginner?

Electric guitars are generally easier to play than acoustic guitars due to their lower string action and narrower necks. They also offer a wide range of sounds and can be amplified, allowing beginners to experiment with different tones and styles.

How do I choose an electric guitar for beginners?

As a beginner, you should look for an electric guitar that is comfortable to play and sounds good. Consider the body’s size, weight, and shape; pickups; tremolo; and your own style. Smaller bodies are often easier to handle but lack the tone and resonance of larger models. Heavier guitars may have more sustain but can be harder to play for extended periods.

What electric guitar is easiest to play?

For beginners, the best option is usually a guitar with a shorter scale length and low action. This makes it easier to play clean notes without pressing too hard on the strings.

Should you buy an electric guitar with a tremolo?

Whether or not to get an electric guitar with tremolo depends on your playing style. Players who prefer to play in various notes and styles may find tremolo helpful. However, it’s optional and can be quite complex for beginners.

Does guitar hardware matter?

Yes, the quality of the hardware on an electric guitar will affect its sound and playability. High-quality hardware can help you get a better tone, sustain, and overall feel when playing. Low-quality hardware can make playing more difficult and lead to tuning issues or worse. It’s best to invest in suitable quality hardware.

Our 'Champions' are the musicians we think showcase their instrument to the wider public, and make a substantial difference to the popularity of their instrument family. Non of the 'Champions' are remitted in any way by Ted's List, and our list is completely impartial. If you have a favourite musician you would like to nominate to be added to our list of 'Champions', then please do contact us.
