Imagine having Jimi Hendrix’s flair, Jimmy Page’s precision, and Eddie Van Halen’s finger-tapping magic at your fingertips.

This article reveals 6 must-know tips from the big shots to help you go from garage band to rock legend faster than you can say “guitar solo.”

A Rock Concert Where The Electric Lead Guitar Player Playing Excellently

From setting your amp to eleven to mastering those iconic licks, get ready to turn heads and drop jaws with your brand-new rock star skills. Let’s jump head-first into the wild world of electric guitar greatness and light a fire under that inner rockstar that’s just itching to break out!

Choosing the right Guitar

ONE

An Electric Guitarist Playing With Stage Lights

Choosing the right guitar is super important for your rock star dreams. Go for a guitar that fits your style.

If you love heavy riffs and solos, consider getting a guitar with a humbucker pickup, like a Les Paul or an SG. These will give you an excellent, thick sound.

Also, pay attention to the weight – carrying a heavy guitar can be a real pain unless you’re super strong. Head to your local guitar shop, try out a few, and don’t be shy about posing in the mirror!

Comfort is super important! Your guitar should feel like a part of you. Try out different neck widths, weights, and body shapes to find the perfect fit; the coolest guitar is the one you can play well.

Master Your Guitar

TWO

To get good at guitar, you need to practice a ton. Begin with the basics: learn your scales and chords well. If you want to sound like Hendrix, you’ve got to learn how to bend those strings like a pro.

How To Play Like A Rock God: 6 Tips From The Pros

Experiment with techniques:

  • Slides and Bends: These are your best mates. They add flair and drama to your solos.

  • Hammer-ons and Pull-offs: These will make your riffs smoother than a greased pig.

  • Palm Muting: Essential for that crunchy sound in your power chords.

And don’t forget the gear! Your amp settings and pedal effects can make or break your sound. So, tweak them until you find your signature style.

Understanding
Amps and Effects

THREE

A Guitar Amp On Stage With The Electric Guitar At The Back

An electric guitar without an amp is like a toaster without bread—pretty useless. Begin with a good amp.

A combo amp is a great, versatile choice for beginners. If you want to wake up the whole neighborhood, a stack might be more your style.

Effects pedals are where the real magic happens. Most people start with a distortion pedal, then explore delay, reverb, and chorus for many cool sounds. Just keep in mind that with great power comes great noise complaints!

Chord Progression Mastery

FOUR

Chord progressions are sequences of chords that aim to create a musical journey. Start with the essential I-IV-V progression. For example, in the G major key, these chords are G, C, and D. It is easy and peasy, right?

How To Play Like A Rock God: 6 Tips From The Pros

Additionally, explore the ii-V-I progression for jazz-rock fusion, such as A minor, D major, and G major.

Don’t forget to spice things up with power chords. Only use the root and fifth. They sound meaty and are perfect for rocking out.

Here's a list to get started:
  • G Major: G - B - D
  • C Major: C - E - G
  • D Major: D - F# - A

Perfecting Riffs,
Licks, and Solos

FIVE

An Electric Guitarist Playing His Riff At The Rock Concert

Riffs, licks, and solos are the backbone of electric guitar playing. Sharpening these skills can transform you from a good player to a phenomenal one. Begin with the basics: identify your favorite rock songs and learn the most iconic riffs.

Remember to include improvisation in your practice. Not only does it boost creativity, but it also improves reaction time—which is crucial when playing live. Use scales and arpeggios to build spontaneous solos.

Humor Tip!
Practising in front of a mirror is great unless you're Dracula.
HUMOR!

Finally, record your practice sessions. Listen to the playback to catch mistakes and identify areas for improvement. Sharing your recordings with friends or mentors can provide invaluable feedback.

The Art of Performance and Crowd Interaction

SIX

A Guitarist Performing Using An Electric Guitar Strap

Performing isn’t just about playing well; it’s about captivating your audience. Master the art of making a grand entrance or incorporating epic air-guitar moves, and remember that engaging with the crowd can make a huge difference.

Top Tip
A Guitar Player On Stage
Pro Tip:

Lock eyes with audience members occasionally. It’s like Cupid’s Arrow sans the romance.

When done right, stage diving can be the highlight of a performance. Ensure the crowd is ready to catch you (no one likes face-planting), and always dive with confidence. Daring stunts engage the audience and elevate the energy of the show.

The performance also means connecting deeply with your bandmates. Play back-to-back with the bassist or share the microphone with the lead singer. These small interactions often become memorable moments for the audience.

Consider your stage outfit. Wear something comfortable yet striking. Think Freddie Mercury’s iconic outfits or Slash’s top hat. It’s all about creating a visual and musical spectacle.

So, there you have six fantastic tips to help you shred like a rock god. Just remember, everyone starts somewhere, and even the greats like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen had to put in their practice hours.

An Overlay Photo Of Guitarist Playing On Stage With Stage Lights

Practice daily, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Let’s recap quickly:

  • Focus on technique: Finger dexterity and precision can make a difference.

  • Master essential chords: These form the backbone of many iconic rock songs.

  • Experiment with effects: Don’t be afraid to play with pedals and settings.

  • Study the legends: Learn from the greats by watching their performances.

  • Be patient: Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor was rock stardom.

Pro Tip!
Wearing stylishly ripped jeans and a leather jacket doesn't hurt either. I was just saying.
AMAZING TIP!

Keep your chin up and your pick ready. Rock on, future legends!

Regarding the Silverburst Strat, wouldn’t you say it’s a bit niche for general recommendation? I’ve always found Stratocasters versatile, but the Player Plus series, with its modern features, may not be for everyone, especially purists.

Totally see your point, Liz. It’s all about the vibe and what you’re going for. The Player Plus does have its charm for those looking for that extra edge.

Agreed, the Silverburst might not be my first pick. Yet, it’s the variety that Fender offers that makes the brand so appealing to a wide audience.

Intrigued by the section on amps and effects. It’s fascinating to see how much technology has evolved to shape the sound of a guitar. From valve amps to digital modelling, the options today are limitless. It would be great to see a comparison of how different setups can affect tone and playability.

Ted's List is a project run by The Emery Foundation - a Micro-Trust of GivingWorks, registered charity number 107877.

The idea of Ted's List was setup to raise funds for musicians during the Covid-19 pandemic as part of the Get Musicians Working project.

Our 'Champions' are the musicians we think showcase their instrument to the wider public, and make a substantial difference to the popularity of their instrument family. Non of the 'Champions' are remitted in any way by Ted's List, and our list is completely impartial. If you have a favourite musician you would like to nominate to be added to our list of 'Champions', then please do contact us.
