Steinway Grand Piano Price: Unveiling the Cost of Musical Elegance

The sweet resonance of a Steinway Grand Piano price isn’t just a number—it’s a ticket to an elite musical journey.

I’ve played many pianos, but none are as good as a Steinway; it’s no surprise that owning one is a big achievement for professional pianists.

Steinway Logo

Every Steinway piano is a work of art, carefully crafted with quality you can see and hear. It’s like adding a valuable member to the family that becomes more impressive over time.

Now, let’s get straight to the point; you’re eager to understand the mystery behind the prices of Steinway Grand Pianos.

Keep reading as I take you into the world of Steinway and what your wallet might expect to encounter.

Table of Contents

Price Factors for
Steinway Grand Pianos

Steinway Upright Piano

The price can vary quite a bit when looking at a Steinway grand piano.

The main ingredients in that price vary whether it’s new or used, how it’s made, and where it’s located.

1

New Steinway Piano Costs

Did you know many new Steinway pianos are serenading into the market?

The petite yet elegant Model S starts at around £46,000, setting the stage for the rest of its family.

If you fancy something more splendid, the majestic Model D, beloved in concert halls, can command up to nearly £125,000.

2

Used Steinway Piano Values

Used Steinway pianos typically cost about 48% of their current Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).

So, if you’ve set your heart on a used Model M, its price might be roughly £35,500, depending on its life story and condition.

3

Materials and Craftsmanship

The materials and craftsmanship are the secret ingredients to your Nan’s best Sunday roast; they make all the difference.

The standard satin ebony looks sleek, but maybe you’re more a dark cherry finish or Macassar ebony kind of pianist. You get posh woods like kewazinga bubinga, too, which can increase the price tag.

Then there’s the nitty-gritty, like the string tension, which on a Steinway is enough to launch your tunes straight to the moon!

4

Location and Shipping

My hands get all tingly just thinking about the journey of a Steinway to its new home. If you’re in the UK like me, factor in exchange rates and a bit of a wait for your piano to cross the pond.

And remember the shipping costs; they don’t just pop these beauties in the post with a first-class stamp.

The further you are, the more coin it’ll take to bring your Steinway to its final performance stage.

Additional Considerations and Services

Steinway Piano In A Well Lit Room

When investing in the elegance of a Steinway grand piano, there’s more than the initial price tag to consider.

I like nurturing a relationship involving tuning and technology that keeps the music flowing beautifully.

Tuning and Maintenance

Maintaining the majestic sound of a Steinway is paramount. That’s why consistent tuning and using genuine parts during services are crucial to upholding the piano’s quality.

Steinway piano prices reflect the extraordinary care and craftsmanship that go into each instrument; thus, tuning and maintenance follow suit to ensure every note played is a testament to the Steinway reputation.

Regular maintenance involves tuning pins and attention to felt, strings, and action regulation.

This is where a Steinway artist might get quite particular, only trusting certified technicians to keep their piano in top-notch performance condition.

After all, a well-maintained Steinway sings like no other, and I’m all about making sure that song goes on for as long as possible.

Tuning A Grand Piano

Steinway Spirio Ownership

Now, let’s chat about the Steinway Spirio.

This isn’t just any piano; it’s a high-resolution player piano that merges rich history with modern tech. Steinway Spirio ownership adds a layer of convenience for folks like me who adore pianos with a technological edge.

Steinway Spirio Grand Piano

The Spirio system brings a selection of Steinway artists’ performances into the living room. Thanks to the exceptional Steinway piano pricing, it’s like having a concert at your beck and call.

Whether a grand or an upright piano, the Spirio adds an enchanting presence to a Steinway, transforming it from a musical instrument to a hub of artistry and innovation.

Different Models and Their Features

Steinway grand and upright pianos have a reputation that precedes them, with each model boasting its unique character and features.

As someone who loves Steinway pianos, I’ll give you a sneak peek into the various models and what makes each one special.

1

The Distinguished Model D

The Steinway Model D is the quintessence of concert grand pianos.

Professional musicians widely favor it and dominate in New York and Hamburg concert halls.

Its sizable dimension delivers an unmatched volume and breathtaking tonal depth.

Steinway Model D
2

Elegant Model A and B

Model A is sometimes called the ‘salon grand’ because it’s ideally suited for larger rooms with its grandeur and robust sound.

On the other hand, Steinway B piano earns the title ‘perfect piano’ due to its versatile size and exceptional balance of size to sound quality—a beloved choice for both practice and performance.

Steinway Model A
3

Compact Model O and S

The Model O and Model S Steinways offer a sublime solution when space is at a premium.

Model O provides a resonant soundboard in a more compact frame, ideal for intimate venues or personal studios.

Then there’s the smallest of the bunch, Model S—ideal for smaller spaces but still delivering that glorious Steinway sound one would expect from such a storied name.

Investing in Quality and Endurance

Steinway Piano Concert D

When it comes to Steinway Grand Pianos, I can’t help but admire their undying commitment to quality and lasting endurance.

The blend of luxurious sound and steadfast value makes these instruments a robust investment.

Sound and Performance

Pianist Performing Using A Grand Piano

A Steinway Grand Piano is not just an instrument; it’s an experience for the player and the listener.

My ears revel in the distinct Steinway sound, a blend of depth, warmth, and clarity that resonates from the patented Steinway Diaphragmatic Soundboard.

This soundboard’s unique design amplifies the dynamic range, allowing every note to be as full-bodied and rich as a fine wine.

Longevity and Resale Value

A Grand Piano On A Theater Stage

When holding its value, a Steinway is akin to a rare gem. Often, a well-looked-after Steinway can fetch around 75% of its current retail price, even after a decade.

Whether it’s a brand-new purchase or a rebuilt Steinway, the longevity is remarkable, with proper maintenance ensuring these pianos endure through the generations, much like treasured heirlooms.

Where to Buy a Steinway Grand Piano

Steinway Pianos Inside The Piano Store

Hunting for a Steinway Grand Piano is like seeking out a work of art; the experience should be just as luxurious as the instrument itself.

So, for a prospective buyer like myself, knowing the best places to shop is essential for making an informed and delightful purchase.

1

Official Steinway Showrooms

I always say that if you want the whole Steinway experience, you can’t beat the official Steinway showrooms.

These spots have a wide selection of Steinway pianos and are staffed by experts who’ll walk you through the subtleties of each model.

Each location prides itself on having an expansive inventory, offering everything from the classic Model B to the exquisite Model D.

2

Authorized Dealers

If I’m far from an official showroom, I will go for an authorized Steinway dealer, where the quality of service and product is still top-notch.

Steinway ensures their authorized dealers meet rigorous standards, so I’m confident I’m getting a genuine Steinway Piano.

These dealers usually carry a variety of models, and sometimes, I can even find a used gem that has been meticulously cared for.

Steinway Grand Piano Price:
Final Thoughts

Owning a Steinway is more than just a purchase—it’s an investment in musical excellence.

I’ve seen prices stretch from the tens of thousands into the hundreds, especially for those models cherished by concert pianists.

The Model M and O tickle my fancy with their promise of immaculate sound in a size that doesn’t command the room.

Sure, the price tags might provoke a gulp, but then I remember it’s a Steinway I’m dreaming of. These instruments aren’t simply bought; they’re welcomed into your life, potentially enhancing your home’s melody for generations.

It delights me to think I’m joining a line of owners, including musical legends.

For students and professionals alike, a Steinway could be the companion for a lifetime of music. It is a once-in-a-lifetime purchase.

Not merely a magnificent instrument but a legacy to cherish and pass on.

I read here bout the Steinway Spirio and yeah it’s fancy with all those tech features, but don’t you think sticking to traditional piano learning methods is better than relying too much on tech? I mean it’s cool and all but playing pianos is also about feeling the music through your fingers, not just watching and replicating. Just a thought.

While the article meticulously addresses various crucial aspects regarding the acquisition of a Steinway Grand Piano, such as the impact of materials and craftsmanship, model specifics, and the importance of tuned maintenance, I find myself ponderously reflecting upon the substantially considerable financial investment required. As a dedicated high school music educator, the ambition to incorporate a Steinway into our music program is a dream fervently nurtured. However, the pragmatic approach necessitates a thorough exploration into fundraising efforts or potential grants available that can substantially mitigate the fiscal burden on our modest budget. I wonder if Robert Emery, or perhaps other readers, might provide insights into feasible paths toward achieving this admirable goal.

Really appreciated the detailed breakdown on Steinway models here, especialy pondering over the sound and performance section for my little pianist at home. Curious if Robert Emery has any thoughts on starting kids on a Model S due to its compact size, or would jumping straight to a Model D be more beneficial for their musical journey in the long run? Trying to balance investment and quality here.

Model D would be a dream for any pianist, but starting on a Model S is practical and still provides that Steinway excellence.

ElizaJ, went through a similar debate last year. Opted for Model O due to space and it’s been great for my son. Definitely consider your space and how committed your child is!

Ted's List is a project run by The Emery Foundation - a Micro-Trust of GivingWorks, registered charity number 107877.

The idea of Ted's List was setup to raise funds for musicians during the Covid-19 pandemic as part of the Get Musicians Working project.

Our 'Champions' are the musicians we think showcase their instrument to the wider public, and make a substantial difference to the popularity of their instrument family. Non of the 'Champions' are remitted in any way by Ted's List, and our list is completely impartial. If you have a favourite musician you would like to nominate to be added to our list of 'Champions', then please do contact us.
