How To Choose The Right Viola
There are three main considerations when looking for the perfect viola for you; budget, sound and size.
When thinking about viola brands, ask yourself “what do I need from it?”. If you love playing in your free time as a hobby, then you can pick something up online. Online music shops often have second hand violas which may cost you around £50/$75. These may not be world-class, but they will allow you to continue enjoying playing for fun without breaking the bank.
I have personally found some great deals on second-hand violas online, and while they may not be top-of-the-line, they have provided me with the opportunity to pursue my musical passion without a significant financial investment.
If you’re planning or studying the viola with a view to becoming a professional player in an orchestra, or if you’re a professional already, you’ll need to spend more money. Professional standard instruments can range from a few thousand pounds to hundreds of thousands, so set yourself a budget and stick to it. They are often bought from a private seller.
The most important aspect of any instrument is its sound. You should love the sound your viola makes, so ensure that whatever you buy has a sound that you enjoy listening to!
Of course, the viola you buy (or buy for your child) has to be the right size. In this next section, we’ll break down how to figure out which size you’ll need.
How To Figure Out What Size Viola You Need
Make sure your new viola is the right size for you. Violas don’t come in set sizes like violins do (quarter size, half size, full size viola etc) but an average size would be about 16 inches length. If you’re a younger player, you can buy one which is perhaps a little big for you right now as you’ll grow into it, but don’t buy one where you’ll be waiting years for it to fit properly.
The important thing to remember about violas is they’re heavy! Don’t buy one which you can’t physically hold up for long periods of time. You don’t want to sit in rehearsals for six hours each day in agony because your viola is too heavy for you.
Most violas range from 12 inches length to 16 inches length. In order to measure this properly, you measure the reverse side of the main body of the instrument, excluding the fingerboard.
The chart below gives a rough guide as to what size and measurement is required for each age. There is no such thing as a full size viola, just larger sizes.
Age | Size |
6-7 years | 12 inches |
7-9 years | 13 inches |
9-12 years | 14 inches |
10-12 years | 15 inches |
Average adult | 15.5 inches |
Large adult | 16 inches |
Some new starters choose to play on violins which are strung with viola strings. This is in case the wider, heavier viola alternative is too heavy for them. They can move up to a ‘real’ viola once they have grown a bit and can manage this extra weight.
Measuring a child for a viola is a vital part of ensuring you buy a suitable length instrument, and something good music teachers will do straight away.
Firstly, check the returns policy of the retailer you’re going for. It’s no good trying a viola which turns out to be the wrong size, only to discover you can’t return it!
In order to ensure that your child gets the right size of viola, they must try holding one.
Hold the viola under their chin with their left hand extended along the back of the instrument and see how far along the fingerboard they can reach with their arm fully extended. If they can reach all the way to the end of the scroll, then it is too small for them and they will need the next size up.
If their left hand comfortably reaches what would be ‘first position’ on the fingerboard (the end nearest the scroll) with their upper and lower arm forming a shallow ‘V’ shape, then the viola is the correct size for them.

What Viola To Buy
Quality of the Material
The quality of the material your viola is made from will greatly influence the instrument’s sound. If it is made from cheaper wood, usually from the US or China, this will be great for the price but less good for the quality of sound it produces, which will be very bright. This may not be a problem if you or your child is a new starter, but if you’re looking for something more refined, choose one made from European style wood.
Investigate where the material is from before you purchase your viola.
Where to Buy a Viola
In terms of where to buy your new viola, this will depend on your budget.
As we mentioned, if viola playing is your hobby, Amazon will have plenty of options. If you’re buying an instrument for a beginner, we recommend a retailer like Gear4music, as they have plenty of ‘child sized’ violas. If you’re looking for a professional level instrument, which could cost thousands of pounds, we suggest getting recommendations from your colleagues and music teachers. You can also approach different viola-makers. This is a good idea if your teacher or your colleagues have had good experiences with a particular maker and they may even be able to get you a discount as a referral.
However, be warned – in some cases, very young instruments that a maker may just have completed may still take time for the instrument’s sound to settle.
Should You Rent or Buy a Viola?
If you’re playing professionally, you should buy your viola outright. However, if you’re in the process of learning the instrument, you could consider renting a student viola. This is particularly handy if you’re buying for a child who is growing all the time and they will need to move up sizes every year or so.
As we mentioned previously, check the rental policy of the retailer, as some will allow you to move up sizes as part of their agreement with you.
Viola Setup
This is a short section in our guide, because there’s little or no setup required when you purchase your new instrument, including with the bridge! Later on in this article, we’ll talk you through the different items you’ll require as well as the viola itself, but for now let’s recommend some specific violas.

It is the largest music retailer in the UK and fast becoming the most respected online music shop in the US too. Their customer service is excellent, they have competitive prices, really fast shipping, and usually have the longest guarantee.
Most professional musicians use Gear4music, so there is no reason why you shouldn’t too!
- Low cost
- Package deals
- Hand made
- Maple fingerboards are less durable than ebony

This is a really good choice for a starter viola. Gear4Music are one of the more respected viola brands, who hand-make all of their instruments and the tone quality and resonance is good, with a lower price tag than many of the others on this list. They offer a package with a viola bow, too, meaning you’ll save money on that additional purchase.
One criticism is that the fingerboards of these violas are made from maple, not the usual ebony, which means they are less resilient than other brands. These fingerboards are less likely to withstand the repeated tapping of fingers, so you may need to take them in for repair more often than more durable brands.

COMES WITH: D'Addario strings
FEATURES:
- Inspired by the great Stradivarius
- Solid tonewoods produce a rich and full sound
- Includes an shaped case and a Bulletwood bow

The best beginner viola is a highly sought-after instrument for those who are starting their journey into playing the viola. Cremona violas come in a package including viola strings, a viola bow and rosin, which is a good money-saver, and the violas themselves are equipped with 4 adjusters, which makes it easy to tune. The quality is not as high as that of a Cecilio or a Stentor and price is higher than a Cecilio, but this is still a good bet.

COMES WITH: Ebony Pegs and Fingerboard
FEATURES:
- Carved From Solid Tonewoods
- Most Recommended Among Schools and Teachers
- Includes Hard Case and Bow
Stentor Student 2 Viola Outfit

One of the most popular brands to buy an advanced viola from, Stentors are a great choice for those who want a better quality instrument for a reasonable price. Every student instrument is checked before it is sent out for delivery, ensuring quality control and they come in a variety of sizes, making it more than likely that they’ll have the right instrument for you.
Compared with other student violas, the attention to quality control and the range of available sizes set them apart. The craftsmanship and tone of Stentor violas have consistently impressed me, making them a standout choice for those seeking a reliable and affordable instrument.
Some players may find the setup or the quality of the accessories to be less than optimal. However, despite this, the overall quality and affordability of Stentor violas make them a worthwhile investment for students and musicians looking for a reliable instrument that offers great value for the price.
Stentor violas have consistently provided me with a reliable and enjoyable playing experience, making them a brand I highly recommend.

Primavera is a popular viola maker, which offers starter and intermediate violas with a high quality, albeit at a slightly higher price than some listed above. Many packages also come with a child proof’ bow, which essentially means it can withstand any knocks, and is equipped with four adjusters which make tuning easy. This is a good choice for those who don’t mind spending a little more.
Our viola buyer’s guide conclusion is that the Primavera is the best viola overall and if you have the budget, this is the viola for you. If you have a slightly lower price tag in mind, we’d recommend the Student Viola by gear4Music, as this combines a higher quality instrument with a lower price.
Advanced
When purchasing an advanced viola, we strongly recommend discussing options with your teacher or fellow students. Dealers, such as Sean Bishop, based in London, have a wealth of knowledge on this subject, as well as a huge variety of instruments in all sizes. The instruments these dealers have in stock from various luthiers range in price, from £/$5,000 to over 50,000; so ensure that you set yourself a budget and stick to it.

Spare Strings
You’ll need spares with you at all times as a violist, just in case disaster strikes mid-rehearsal and you have to change a string asap.
We recommend buying a set of 4 at a time, and our choice would be Dominant. These are higher quality without being too expensive.

MATERIAL: A+D aluminium wound, G+C silver wound

Viola case
Having a good case is a must for an violist. Depending on the value of your instrument, you need a case which is lightweight, temperature resistant, has security features such as a combination lock and is practical, with pouches for you to store sheet music in. This makes the difference.
We recommend Bam cases, because they are very secure, sturdy and range in price to suit all needs, with plenty of case options available.

Shoulder Rest
When looking for your shoulder rest, you need to find one which is comfortable and adjustable. This is particularly useful for children who are moving up sizes frequently, because you won’t want to buy a new one every time they change instrument!
We recommend the Kun brand, because the models they sell are sturdy, comfy, adjustable between two sizes and they don’t break the bank.

Viola Buyer’s Guide
Summary
We hope you found these viola reviews incredibly helpful!
Whatever instrument you go for in the end, remember: it’s your decision! Take your time and play as many as possible to find out what you like and don’t like. If you’ve tried ten different violas and haven’t found one you love so far, fear not – it just means you’re 10 instruments closer to your dream instrument.
FAQ's
The best way to tell is to play it and see if you like the sound, but there are other clues, such as the material the wood is made from.
You should always choose a suitable instrument for your size and budget, and check out some reviews online. For intermediate players we would recommend models made by Stentor.
It is important to measure the player to make sure you buy the correct size instrument. Our guide on this page will help with this.
The least you should expect to pay for an acceptable starter instrument is £50 / $70.
We absolutely believe you can buy an instrument online. However, we strongly recommend buying a viola you can return after you’ve tried it if you don’t like it – check the returns policy!
Primavera or Cecilio offer great starter to intermediate level instruments for kids. For a more advanced level, consult with your child’s teacher in a lesson, and instrument seller.
Yes, a case is an absolute necessity. We recommend cases made by Bam.
No, viola bows are thicker and heavier than their violin cousins, and you should always make sure you use the appropriate one, because a violin bow just won’t sound right. You could also purchase a carbon fiber bow.
We suggest renting an instrument from a seller if you/your child is still growing to avoid having to purchase a new instrument regularly. If you’re older, buying an instrument is a good idea so you can really get used to it.
Violin strings cannot be used on a viola because they are too short. Viola strings are longer and thicker to produce the lower pitch of the instrument.
A violin bow can be used on a viola, but it may not produce the best sound. A viola bow is typically heavier and longer than a violin bow to accommodate the larger size of the instrument.
Mark Gibbs, this article serves as an excellent guide for those at the threshold of their musical journey with the viola. As a tutor, I’ve witnessed firsthand the ambiguity and confusion that comes with selecting the right instrument and accessories. Your recommendations for beginner and intermediate models are spot on, and I find that highlighting the necessity of quality materials and proper setup invaluable advice. Well done.
didn’t know you could rent a viola. might give it a shot before buying, see how it feels.
The segment on viola setup resonates well with one of the most overlooked aspects of string instruments – customization for playability and comfort. Many beginners underestimate how a properly set up viola can significantly reduce learning frustration and enhance playing experience. It’s pivotal for educational resources like this to emphasize the importance of a personalized setup.
Absolutely, a good setup makes all the difference. It’s something I always stress to my students.
While I agree on the importance of a proper setup, beginners might not have the discernment to know what a ‘good setup’ entails without guidance from a teacher or a more experienced player.
hey Mark Gibbs, great piece! i’m thinking about getting a viola and not sure what size? how do i figure out the right size for me since i’m not really a kid size haha. thanks!
