Anatomy Of The Electric Guitar

Things to consider when buying an electric guitar for beginners

A beginner electric guitar kit is a comprehensive package that includes all the essential tools and accessories needed for someone who is starting their journey in playing the electric guitar.

But, how much are you willing to spend and why? This is a very important question.

It’s never a good idea to spend hundreds (or thousands) on a guitar that will fall out of use and gather dust a month after buying it.

But if you know you’re serious about the guitar and want to be the member of a band; or that your child has shown a real sense of love and dedication for the guitar, it may be worth investing a little more in a decent quality instrument.

See the options below for good suggestions for all budgets and ability levels.

Build quality

The build quality affects how easy the instrument is to play and how long it will last. Most guitar starter packs have very well-built guitars, so as long as you stick with a well-known manufacturer and buy from a respected online dealer, you can be sure you’re getting something decent.

However, if you’re able to do so, I’d still recommend trying the instrument first before you buy. It’s always the best way to gauge how well a guitar has been made.

Sound quality

Each guitar will sound unique in its own way, and that unique sound is what’s known as the sound quality.

This sound quality will come from a combination of the electronics inside the guitar, the wood its made from and, ultimately, the way it’s played.

Even if you know nothing about guitars, don’t be afraid to simply use your ears to judge here. Watch some YouTube reviews or try a guitar out for yourself first. If it sounds good to you, then it is good. End of.

Sound Quality

Comfort & Playability

It’s always best to go for a guitar that feels easy to play. Playability can be broken down into many factors, including build materials, set up, neck width and weight distribution, but learning about these things is overkill for most beginners.

The best way to judge playability if you don’t know about these things is to simply play a guitar. If it feels good to you and if it’s easy to play, then that’s all you need to know.

Comfort &Amp; Playability

Size

Guitars come in many different sizes, but for beginner musicians, the two options to pay attention to are full-sized and three-quarter sized guitars. Three-quarter sized guitars have been scaled down and are great options for children or guitarists with smaller hands.

Full-sized guitars are best for adults of all ability levels.

Sizes

Simplicity

How simple a guitar is often refers to the number of tone controls that are part of the guitar itself. How much simplicity matters is very much down to the owner.

Some love all the gadgets and dials that come with complex modern instruments. Some love the simplicity of just having a few dials that don’t do much.

Follow your gut here and just go with what feels right to you.

Simplicity

Materials

The materials a guitar is made from will affect the overall sound and playability of the guitar. A maple neck will feel and sound different from a rosewood neck. A rosewood neck will weigh a different amount to a maple neck. But a total beginner may also not be able to appreciate the differences between a rosewood and maple neck.

The best way to tell is to try. If one material feels best, then go with that. Even if you don’t understand why.

Materials

Quality of tuners

This is a simple one. If the tuning of the guitar keeps slipping whilst you play or in between practice sessions, then the quality of the tuners isn’t great.

Reading through the customer reviews of a particular model or doing a quick google search can often tell you all you need to know about the quality of tuners on a particular instrument so take a moment to do some quick research.

Strings

The best way to learn which strings sound best is to try different manufacturers. A quick google search will bring up many and – whilst you do need to make sure you get ones that suit an electric guitar specifically – ultimately which brand to go for is just a matter of personal preference

Strings

Best brands of electric guitar

There are, sadly, too many companies to name here. There are a lot of great guitar manufacturers out there, and most of them do offer great budget instruments.

This means that, whilst I can give you some of the highlights, so to speak, they are just that.

We’ll look at iconic guitars here like the Stratocaster, the Telecaster, and even a Les Paul because they are made by famous brands – Fender/Squier and Gibson.

Best Brands Of Electric Guitar

However, if you don’t see a famous brand on this list, then it’s not because we don’t think it’s great.

It simply didn’t make this list.

So, what are the best brands of electric guitar? And specifically, which guitars from those brands are worth your attention?

Best electric guitars for children

If you’re buying a guitar for a child, then you’ll need something specialized.

I’d strongly recommend going with one of the guitar starter packs because this will give your child a great head start and all the tools they’ll need to learn properly.

However, one extra detail to look for is a three-quarter sized guitar. These are slightly smaller, which will suit the body shape and smaller hand size of a young child much better than a full-sized guitar.

Here are two great three-quarter sized guitar starter packs.

Best value electric guitars for beginners

When buying an electric guitar starter kit, value for money should be a key concern. Because guitar packs for beginners are such a lucrative corner of the market for instrument makers, most of them will do all they can to make their guitar starter packs good value as they possibly can with affordable deals..

This means they will include all the essentials you’ll need to get a good head start in learning the guitar. But they won’t skimp on quality when it comes to the guitar itself.

Best Value Electric Guitars For Beginners

Sometimes, as is the case with the two options below, you may pay a little more to get a better quality instrument, but the money is well worth it. And to help make the higher price more appealing to consumers, guitar makers will include some more unique extras like more powerful amps or instructional DVDs, which will give you a head start in mastering the guitar.

Below are two great options for beginners that want quality guitar packs but don’t want to pay the earth to get them.

Amp

An amp is a vital accessory for any beginner electric guitar players. Without an amp, the electric guitar won’t be able to produce much volume!

While many a starter kit or beginner electric guitar packs do come with an amplifier, these amps are often only suitable for home practice.

If you want a serious home practice amp, then the Positive Grid Spark is a great option. It has a great sound and comes with an app that you can use to get the best tones out of the amp.

Strap

A good strap will allow the player to play the electric guitar whilst standing. Most younger players interested in playing pop, rock, blues and other more contemporary styles of music prefer to stand whilst they play, so a strap is vital.

This LEKATO memory foam strap does precisely that and comes in at a reasonable price.

Electric vs electric-acoustic guitar

This may sound like a contradiction in terms, but there is such a thing as an electric-acoustic guitar.

A traditional acoustic guitar requires no power to project its sound. It uses its own body shape to project itself acoustically.

However, a traditional electric guitar, like the fender Stratocaster, needs an amplifier to project its sound as it has no such capability to make noise acoustically.

This means you could view an electric-acoustic guitar as a hybrid of the two. When not plugged into an amplifier, then it can still use its body to project itself in a purely acoustic fashion. But it can work through an amplifier too.

This Max ShowKit starter kit is one of the better starter packs on the market. The guitar sounds great, there are plenty of accessories included, and the price is very reasonable.

Good job on highlighting the importance of the right accessories. The amp and pedal can make or break your sound. Beginners, don’t skimp on these. Also, consider trying out different pedal combinations to find what really suits your style. It’s like cooking; finding the right spice mix can make a world of difference to the final dish. Cheers, Hugh Richardson, for the solid advice.

I got to disagree with the part about basswood bodies being just for beginners. Some high-end models use it too because of its balanced tone. Not everything cheap is low quality!

Fantastic article, Hugh Richardson. The section on the anatomy of the electric guitar really breaks down the complexities into digestible information for beginners. It’s crucial for new players to understand what each part does as it significantly enhances their learning curve. I’d love to see more in-depth exploration on the pickups and how they influence the sound differences between guitars. Keep up the good work!

StrumAlong, it really depends on what genre of music you’re into. Single-coils are great for clean, bright sounds like in country or funk, while humbuckers carry a fuller, warmer sound perfect for rock and metal.
