Turning into a guitar legend demands more than just loving music; nimble fingers are needed too. A pedal is a must-have for your guitar setup, enhancing the instrument’s sound and making it truly **awesome**.

A guitar’s pedal is an essential component. It distorts or replaces the original sound effect. With so many options, picking the right guitar pedal can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack.

The guitar pedal is a cutting-edge piece of technology for guitar players that allows you to do more than improve your sound. It also allows you to experiment with and broaden the range of the sounds you produce with your instrument.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know to find the best guitar pedals, from where to buy them to how to use them to create music that sounds better than ever.

And I’ll tell you my favourite pedal of all time!

Let’s get started!

Table of Contents

Understanding Pedal Basics

The term “pedal” can be intimidating to a new guitarist. A guitar pedal is a metal effects box that you plug into the guitar’s effects loop and the amplifier’s effects input. The guitar’s tone is cleaned up and amplified by the pedal, also called a stompbox.

The tone is layered with various effects like whammy, shimmer, fuzz, and more. These terms may initially sound completely foreign, but once you hear the resulting sounds, you’ll understand why they were chosen.

As a guitarist, you now have more options than ever for spicing up your sound. Everything from the type of guitar you play to the cutting-edge equipment you use.

Using the right guitar pedals, you can effortlessly bring out the best guitar effects and create incredibly unique sounds for your guitar tunes.

Understanding Pedal Basics 1

There are a wide variety of uses for pedals. A pedalboard connects your guitar to your amplifier and your pedals, allowing you to apply multiple effects to your playing at once. There are essentially four distinct types of pedals:

  1. The signal-boosting or compressing pedal

  2. The signal modulation pedal

  3. The delay and echo pedal

  4. The pedals for filtering, modelling, and multi-effect purposes

Based on the above-mentioned categories, we’ve identified pedals into 11 different pedal types, which will fulfil your guitar music needs.

Types Of Guitar Pedals

While pedals may be described differently depending on the manufacturer or performer, the basic categories remain the same.

Some pedals may give your music an entirely new and unheard-of effect, while others may produce a remarkably similar tone but for small detail. These are the 14 primary categories of pedals found in high-quality guitar pedal sets. Let’s run down the list item by item.

Types Of Guitar Pedals

1. Tuner Pedal

The tune of your instrument will improve with a tuner pedal. You can tune all your strings at once with some polyphonic tuner pedals.

Modern strobing technology is used in some tuners to provide the most precise tuning possible.

Tuner Pedal

2. Wah Pedal

Guitars with wah pedals sound more bluesy and funky.

When you press down on the pedals, the strings will sound eerily similar to a person’s nasally uttered “wah-wah.”

Wah Pedal

3. Compressor Pedal

An electric guitar’s dynamic range is best served by a compressor pedal, which also softens the sound compared to what the instrument would make on its own.

The compressor pedal is simple to operate, requiring only two knobs to adjust the volume and tone of the melody.

Compressor Pedal

4. Distortion Pedal

Distortion is one of the most popular and widely used guitar effects.

The distortion pedal creates an entirely new sound by saturating the signals carrying the guitar’s sound.

Distortion Pedal

5. Overdrive Pedal

Sound pressure is restricted during amplifier construction.

By slightly distorting the guitar signal before it reaches the amplifier, the overdrive pedal extends the sustain of the notes and increases their volume.

This pedal is one of the most popular options among musicians.

Overdrive Pedal

6. EQ Pedal

The EQ pedal’s purpose isn’t to add flair to the guitar’s notes but to adjust the music’s frequency balance and immediate impact.

Eq Pedal

7. Harmonizing Pedal

Using this harmonising pedal, you can make your guitar notes sound drastically different from what you’d expect from stringed instruments.

The octave pedal, or polyphonic pedal, has a few other names.

Harmonizing Pedal

8. Tremolo Pedal

This pedal gives you tremolo and vibrato effects, which change the volume and pitch of your notes. As a result, the guitar notes take on a slightly different timbre.

Tremolo Pedal

9. Phaser Pedal

The Phaser is similar to a chorus pedal, but its sweeping effect and other peaks and rough tones in the notes struck make it sound more natural.

Adjusting the sound’s tempo with a turn of a knob depends heavily on your skill.

Phaser Pedal

10. Chorus Pedal

One of the best effects pedals for guitar, the chorus can be used in various contexts to give the instrument a more dramatic feel.

A shimmering effect is added to the music by the pedal’s replication of the strings and notes with a slight delay.

Chorus Pedal

11. Flanger Pedal

Flanger pedals are like automated wah pedals but with a more limited range of pitch and volume changes.

Like the phaser, the Flanger pedal can produce full effects, but its tone is thicker and more noticeable because it uses time delay rather than phase delay.

Metal, grunge, and even funk are all great choices for this pedal.

Flanger Pedal

12. Volume Pedal

While an amplifier may seem more convenient, a volume pedal allows subtle yet effective volume adjustments on your guitar, while an amp amplifies and distorts your notes.

Volume Pedal

13. Echo Pedal

These days, most musicians have an echo pedal in their pedalboards, which helps them achieve two popular effects simultaneously: delay and reverb.

The delay effect is more like a delayed repeat of the notes, while the reverb effect creates indistinguishable echoes that mix to give a blurred and yet ambient effect.

Echo Pedal

14. Noise Gate Pedals

A noise gate is a type of guitar pedal that reduces the instrument’s volume to cancel out background noise, such as hum or distortion.

Factors to Look for When Buying The Best Guitar Pedal

It’s no longer sufficient to purchase any guitar pedal and start making music. You might not fully understand the advantages of using a pedal as a beginner. Still, as you gain experience and expertise, you’ll value pedals and their effects.

The only way to know which pedal is best for you is to know your musical needs and the pedal’s functions. While searching for the ideal guitar pedal, there are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Genre Of Music

Naturally, you have a preferred musical genre or style as a musician. Paying close attention to specifics like your preferred musical style when deciding on guitar pedals is essential.

Do without; make do. Get the pedal that fits your needs best. If you’re a true guitar pro, you might want to use a pedalboard to make switching between your various effects easier.

2. Quantity Of Pedals

Most of the pedals may look like they do the same thing, but a few have very specific functions. Therefore, keep your pedal count to a minimum if another pedal can serve the same purpose.

3. Portability

Compactness and portability are crucial considerations when searching for the ideal pedal for your guitar.

As a guitarist, you’re constantly on the go; don’t bog yourself down with bulky gear that can be a hassle. Smaller models are the way to go if you want to use multiple pedals to augment your music.

4. Pedalboard Requirements

A pedalboard is an adapter that holds your guitar’s effects pedals and keeps them wired to the guitar and amp.

It enables the simultaneous use of several pedals. Before deciding on a pedalboard, double-check the maximum number of pedals it can accommodate. Don’t let it get in the way of enjoying a play or concert in real-time.

Factors To Look For When Buying The Best Guitar Pedal 2

5. Band Coordination

As the lead guitarist in a band, you must consider which pedals to use to avoid a clash of similar strings or build.

You probably don’t want to buy the same pedal that everyone in your band has, so be selective.

Make sure you’re using the appropriate pedal if you want to make an impression. Invest in the finest guitar pedals ever made and take your band’s sound to new heights.

6. Unique Identity

Although guitar pedals are designed to improve the sound, they cannot automatically alter the pitch of your playing to sound like your favourite pop star or rock band.

Keep in mind that the pedal only makes minor adjustments to your music using preprogrammed styles. Although, if you pick the right pedal, you can make a statement about who you are and what you stand for.

7. Model Choices

It’s wise to try out as many varieties of pedals as possible before settling on one. The best way to find the right guitar pedal is to shop around for a while, both online and in physical stores.

Explore the different permutations that can help bring out your unique musical style. This will show whether the alignment is in the bass, treble, or somewhere in between.

8. Budget

Determine which pedals fall within your price range by researching in advance. Once you’ve determined which pedals are financially feasible for you, you can search for pedals that meet your musical needs.

Avoid getting the absolute cheapest pedals you can find. Go for it if a more expensive but superior model is available. Many all-in-one pedals could meet this requirement and serve your needs. Don’t fret, and keep looking.

9. Pedal Durability

It’s not enough if your shiny pedal has a million controls. Your best guitar pedal’s longevity will determine its monetary worth and give you time to weigh your options before purchasing.

Maximum durability requires premium components, including the pedal foot, cables, and batteries. To better understand your pedal’s value, you should check the quality of these parts in particular.

10. Where To Buy

It’s possible that, in this day and age of constant connectivity, you’ve concluded that shopping online is preferable. Not all purchases lend themselves to being made in an online store.

You can’t just buy something at a glance on the internet if you need to try it out and compare it to others first. However, you can find incredible sales, deals, and price cuts at online retailers. Do you need any more to make your head spin?

In that case, your best bet is to read some customer reviews online, do some comparison shopping at a regular brick-and-mortar store, and then buy it online if you’re still convinced.

Once you’ve narrowed down the criteria for a guitar pedal, you can find the one that best suits your needs in online stores. You could also go to a music store and experiment with various pedals. Getting a hands-on feel for different models is helpful before making a purchase.

FAQ's

What type of guitar pedal is best?

The answer will depend on your personal preferences and playing style. However, some of the most popular and versatile types of pedals include overdrive/distortion, delay, and reverb.

Overdrive and distortion pedals can add warmth and character to your tone, while delay and reverb pedals can create a sense of space and depth. Ultimately, the best choice for you will depend on the sound you’re trying to achieve and the types of music you’re playing.

How many guitar pedals do you really need?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the number of pedals you need will depend on your preferences, playing style, and musical goals. Some guitarists prefer a minimalist approach with just a few key pedals, while others enjoy experimenting with a wide range of effects.

However, it’s important to remember that more pedals don’t necessarily mean better sound and that a well-chosen selection of pedals can be just as effective as a large collection.

Lewis Turner , while your article encompasses a broad selection of pedals, I must say, the emphasis on pedal durability is somewhat overlooked in your factors for consideration. As a professional who’s been on countless tours, the rigors of the road demystify assumptions about durability. I’ve seen pedals from lesser-known brands outlast their premium counterparts. It’s essential for beginners to understand that price does not always equate to durability or reliability.

Ted's List is a project run by The Emery Foundation - a Micro-Trust of GivingWorks, registered charity number 107877.

The idea of Ted's List was setup to raise funds for musicians during the Covid-19 pandemic as part of the Get Musicians Working project.

Our 'Champions' are the musicians we think showcase their instrument to the wider public, and make a substantial difference to the popularity of their instrument family. Non of the 'Champions' are remitted in any way by Ted's List, and our list is completely impartial. If you have a favourite musician you would like to nominate to be added to our list of 'Champions', then please do contact us.
