The Roland FP10 Digital Piano

Roland Fp10 Digital Piano Cover

If you’re looking for an entry-level digital piano that won’t break the bank, the Roland FP-10 is a great choice. As the latest addition to the popular model FP series, it features high-quality piano sound and fully weighted keys with a PHA-4 Standard Keyboard that feels like an acoustic piano.

The Roland FP10 offers an exceptional balance of authentic piano feel and portability, making it an ideal choice for pianists seeking a compact yet expressive instrument. With its affordable price point and high-quality sound, the FP10 is a standout option for both beginners and experienced players.

Plus, it’s compact and lightweight, so you can easily take it on the road. And if you’re an advanced player, you might be pleasantly surprised by the sound and feel of the FP-10, similar to the more expensive FP-30.

The only downside is that it lacks dedicated lineouts or Bluetooth audio capability, which might be a dealbreaker for some professional stage and studio musicians.

Did you know?
The Roland FP 10 digital piano has a unique feature called "Twin Piano Mode", which allows two people to play side-by-side in the same octave range, making it perfect for duets or teaching sessions.

An Ultimate Review of the Roland FP10 Digital Piano

The Roland FP10 is an excellent choice for an affordable digital piano that delivers a high-quality playing experience. Whether a beginner or an experienced player, you’ll appreciate its realistic touch and expressive sound. Let’s take a look at what this instrument offers.

Sound Quality

An Ultimate Review Of The Roland Fp10 Digital Piano

SuperNATURAL Piano Sound

The SuperNATURAL Piano Sound technology uses advanced modelling algorithms to recreate an acoustic piano’s complex tonal and dynamic characteristics. This results in a rich, nuanced sound full of depth and character.

It has advanced characteristics such as simulated sympathetic string resonance, damper resonance, and key-off resonance are all present and correct. The FP-10 offers a wide range of full piano sounds and tones, from bright and clear to warm and mellow, which are incredibly expressive and responsive to your playing style.

String Resonance

One of the key features of the SuperNATURAL Piano Sound technology is its ability to simulate piano sounds’ string resonance accurately. This is the natural vibration of the piano strings when certain notes are played, adding a subtle but important layer of depth and richness to the sound.

The FP-10 does an excellent job of recreating this effect, producing a truly authentic piano sound.

Damper Resonance

Damper resonance refers to how the piano strings vibrate when the damper pedal is pressed, creating a warm and resonant sound. The FP-10’s advanced modelling algorithms do an excellent job of simulating this effect, resulting in a rich and expressive sound full of character.

Touch and Feel

Roland Piano Keyboard Action

Weighted Keys

The Roland FP10 Digital Piano features a weighted keyboard action with a natural feel of the real piano. The keys are heavier towards the lower end and lighter towards the higher end, just like a traditional acoustic piano. This weighted key action gives you the control and precision to play complex pieces easily.

The keys are also fixed, so they don’t wobble or move around during intense playing sessions.

Escapement Mechanism

The Roland FP10 Digital Piano also features an escapement mechanism that simulates the feel of a grand piano. This mechanism recreates the sensation of the hammers hitting the strings, providing a tactile response piano touch that is similar to that of an acoustic piano.

This feature is especially useful for advanced players who require a high level of control and accuracy.

Touch Sensitivity

The Roland FP10 Digital Piano is equipped with touch sensitivity that allows you to adjust the dynamics of your playing. The touch sensitivity feature lets you control the volume and tone of your notes by adjusting the pressure applied to the keys.

This feature is especially useful for expressive playing, allowing you to create a range of tones and dynamics on keyboards that mimic an acoustic piano.

Connectivity Options

Fp-10 Connectivity

Bluetooth Connectivity

One of the standout features of the FP-10 is its Bluetooth connectivity. With Bluetooth, you can connect your piano to your smartphone, tablet, or computer without cables. This makes it easy to stream music or use apps like Roland’s Piano Partner 2 to enhance your playing experience.

MIDI Connectivity

The FP-10 also offers MIDI connectivity, which allows you to use the piano as a MIDI controller. With MIDI input and output, you can connect the piano to a computer or other MIDI-compatible device to control software instruments or record MIDI data. This makes the FP-10 a versatile tool for music production and composition.

Recording and Performance Features

Recording And Performance Features

Onboard Sounds

The FP10 has many onboard sounds, including acoustic and electric pianos, organs, strings, etc. You can easily switch between sounds using the control panel’s dedicated buttons or the free Piano Partner 2 app on your smartphone or tablet. With Piano Partner 2, you can access additional sounds and features, such as a full organ, rhythm section, music notation display, and more.

Harpsichords and Vibraphone

If you’re a fan of classical music, you’ll love the FP10’s harpsichord sounds. With its authentic harpsichord tones, you can easily recreate the sound of Baroque music. The FP10 also comes with a vibraphone sound, perfect for jazz and other genres requiring a mellow, vibey tone.

Metronome Settings

The FP10 has a built-in metronome, essential for practising and improving timing. You can easily adjust the tempo and time signature using the control panel’s dedicated buttons or the Piano Partner 2 app.

Additionally, the FP10 also comes with a range of rhythm patterns, which can be used to practice different styles of music.

Compact Design and Portability

Fp10 Portability

If you’re looking for a digital piano that is easy to move around and doesn’t take up too much space, the Roland FP-10 is a great choice. Its compact design and portability make it an ideal instrument for small apartments, dorm rooms, and studios.

Measuring just 1284 x 258mm (width/depth), the FP-10 is the most compact 88-key digital piano in its class. This means you can easily place it anywhere in your home or studio and move it around as your requirements change. Its lightweight design makes it easy to carry so you can take it to gigs, lessons or rehearsals without hassle.

Despite its compact size, the FP-10 doesn’t compromise on sound quality or performance.

Affordability

While the Roland FP10 seems like a stellar option, considering it’s pitched as portable, wouldn’t it be more compelling if it also included a built-in battery option for true portability? Not everyone has access to power outlets on the go, and being tethered could limit its purported portability. Just a thought.

Impressed with the comprehensive review, particularly the parts highlighting the FP10’s suitability for beginners. The nuances of touch sensitivity and escapement mechanism details are crucial for fostering proper technique from the start. Additionally, the inclusion of maintenance and care info is a valuable resource for long-term instrument upkeep. Cheers for this insight, very beneficial for my students’ consideration.

On the MIDI connectivity feature, it’s worth mentioning that this allows for extensive options beyond just connecting to computers. It lets you integrate into a wider home studio setup, expanding the FP10’s usability for recording and mixing.

Compact design and portability section nailed it. I’ve toted the FP10 to a few small gigs, and it’s been a breeze. Sound quality doesn’t disappoint in a live setting either, major plus.

Hey, was curious about the bluetooth connectivity options on the FP10. Like, can you connect it to any music software on a tablet or pc? would make practicing a whole lot easier if I can access more tunes and lessons. Thx!

Really appreciated the detailed review on the FP10’s sound quality. The emphasis on String and Damper Resonance gives it a lot of depth, making it sound more authentic. It’s clear this is a solid choice for folks serious about their sound quality.

Totally agree with you here! The FP10’s sound depth is unreal for its price. Been playing on mine for months, and it’s still impressing me.

Just dove into the world of piano and the Roland FP10 caught my eye, especially with its SuperNATURAL sound tech and weighted keys. Wondering if it’s truly as beginner-friendly as they say? Also, does the feel of the keys mimic that of an acoustic piano closely? Super curious because I want the transition to acoustic to be smooth when I make that leap. Thanks for breaking it down, Robert Emery!
