History

Pop singing is a relatively modern phenomenon, evolving from the jazz singing of the early 20th century, which itself has its roots in the classical singing tradition.

Over the last 100 years pop singing has covered multiple genres, from rock to country to hip hop, and continues to be one of the most consumed forms of entertainment on the planet.

Pop Singing Specs

Pop singing voices most often fall into one of four main voice types:

  • Soprano (highest)
  • Alto
  • Tenor
  • Bass

Whereas classical singers tend to limit their pitch ranges to that of a single voice type, it is not uncommon for pop singers to allow themselves the freedom to cover a large range of notes.

How To Play

Or as we should call it, HOW TO SING…

Well… that’s a little complicated.  The human body isn’t the easiest thing to explain; but we will give it a go!

Singing a note is achieved by breathing in, and then making your vocal cords vibrate as you exhale. Different mouth shapes are used to form words, in the same manner as speaking.

A number of high profile pop singers have a vocal range of at least five octaves, including Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Hayley Williams, Celine Dion and Beyoncé.
